Interview with Abel Vallés
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: The most important thing is to understand how artists want to sound, therefore, I always ask for references from other artists or bands that they have in their sights. There may also be references from previous or similar projects.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: They are not two opposing worlds, nor is one better than the other. They are different worlds with which we can achieve great results. It is a question of color rather than quality.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have played the guitar in different bands since I was very young, there I began to study the career of sound technician for 4 years plus a specialization in music production. Later, I worked in various recording studios and had the opportunity to collaborate with great national and international artists.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: In my style the dynamics that each production needs predominates. And get the best result within each style and within the characteristics of each band or artist.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One of the things that many times I like to do in some types of productions is to equalize the volume with the gain of the pro tools of the words of the voices of the interpreters without losing their interpretation to be able to unify and control if the compression is heard.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: The purpose of every song is to find the place where the artist wants to go and to get him to convey what he wants to convey. To do this, I always look for the best possible idea in each production to surprise the audience, prevent it from becoming a monotonous song and satisfy the needs of the market.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: On my website I specify the usual steps with which I work with my clients. But it is always an Online process, in which the individual songs pass me as specified along with an idea of how they want to sound and some reference bands. Then they are assigned a day for production and we look for the desired result.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: In my studio we have different teams. A set of Neve preamps for recordings to get you started. For the mix, we have a X-one controller, a Pro Tools system and Universal Audio converters. We have a large number of plugins from different brands, such as universal audio, alliance plugins, waves, etc. For monitoring we have two Genelecs 1030 and different options of helmets in which we can highlight the AKG 712 Pro. A great choice for mixing and mastering.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The music must transmit, it is the essence of the production and the purpose of the artists. Regardless of the genre, we must try to make people drink to the rhythm of our music. Great artists that inspire me are Adele, Foo Fighters, John Mayer, Bruno Mars, Andres Suarez among others. The producers that I admire are very diverse since each style and artist has their needs, producers like; Rick Rubin, Poul Epworth, Rafa Sardina, Paco Salazar, Jack Antonoff among others.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I usually help them in the mixing and mastering process, advising them without losing sight of the artist or the band. Finishing a project is always usually hard, so I think that the help of a professional can always make these processes flow comfortably.
