Interview with Manuel Acevedo

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Right now I'm juggling around session musician work, music transcription and online teaching. It keeps my mind fresh and away from boredom!

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: For my current work environment I choose digital because of the flexibility and convenience factors. There's just no reasonable way of acquiring enough analog gear that can match the amount of possibilities or the sonic palette that you have at your disposal on a Helix or Fractal or similar digital unit (unless you want to haul around 100+ tube amps and cabs and break your back and bank account in the same process). Of course analog will always have a place in the recording and gigging world (specially if your budget can allow it) but for everyday use there's just no way to beat digital, specially when the modeling/profiling counterparts are getting so close to the originals it's scary!

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: The fact that I have the privilege of doing the thing I love the most for a living!

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: I'd say it's my versatility. Having played in such a variety of styles and bands (from cover bands for weddings and corporate events all the way to blues, rock, tango, folklore, heavy metal and more!) I think there's a lot of original ideas and musical perspectives I can bring to the table.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: It's actually quite simple! I used to have a bunch of gear and pedals but I recently ended up moving to a 100% digital environment. I'm a big fan of Helix and the amp models are absolutely beautiful sounding. Over the years I've collected a ton of top quality impulse responses to accompany these sounds and the result is amazing: I have the power to recreate any amp sound with extreme accuracy, from old school Vox/Fender sounds to high gain amps like Mesa Boogie/Revv/5150 style sounds and anything in between. I still keep some of my old stuff in case I need it, though (Marshall and custom tube preamps). Currently I'm running the Helix as my main interface directly into my computer running Reaper as my DAW of choice (mostly because its flexibility and stability) and using a set of KRK monitors to listen and mix my music.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: Oh boy, I could name musicians for days! Some of the players that come off the top of my head and most influenced my style are: John Petrucci, Joe Satriani, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Guthrie Govan, Rick Graham and the list goes on and on! Regarding my favourite bands and music, I usually listen to a very wide range of musical styles, but I'm quite a fan of instrumental music in particular (specially big video game soundtracks like Final Fantasy, Witcher, Divinity Original Sin and such), rock, metal and progressive music from the 70's!

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: Guitar, Helix, computer, headphones. Pretty compact setup that will allow me to record quality guitars even in the worst possible conditions!

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: Usually customers will come to me looking for quality guitar recordings that are catchy, inspiring and groovy!
