Interview with Thomas Merth

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both!

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I will do everything I can to give you the result that you want.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: Working on Music!

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Try to get the best Recordings/Productions you can. We can do a lot in Mixing and Editing, but we are no Wizards. The better the recording, the better the Mix.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: Computer, PMC TwoTwo 6 and Sunscreen.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I started roughly 10 Years ago with getting my degree in Engineering. But the real school for me started when I got to assist on real Session and shortly after that, was running my own Sessions. I was lucky enough to work in a lot of Studios with a lot of International Artists. From Big SSL and Neve Consoles to just using a Laptop. I love both worlds and that is what my Clients like about me.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: "When everything is bright, nothing is bright" Not Everything needs Top End. It needs to have its own space in a Mix.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: A lot of Hip-Hop and Pop, but I also Mixed many Songs in different genres like Rock, Reggae, Folk.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: My Ears and taste. :)

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: I import the files in a Pro Tool session and check the files for errors and correct labeling. After Listening to the Clients Ruff Mix I create my own Ruff Mix and Check in with the client. When I get the go, I start mixing. I usually live with it for a day and when I am happy, I send it out to the client.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: It's a Hybrid Setup. Pro Tools 2020, Logic Pro X, a lot of Sound Libraries (Native Instruments, Arturia, Spitfire) but also High-end Analog Equipment. I love to work with the best of both worlds.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Too many to name. I really love the mixing work from Jaycen Joshua, Serban Ghenea, Manny Marroquin, Dave Pensado.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: Mostly Mixing and Producing.
