I'm mainly renowned for working directly with the artist to craft a song from scratch from start to finish, however at whatever point of your song creation journey I can give my professional input

My expertise extends beyond the studio, encompassing advising artists on marketing strategies and navigating complex contracts with record labels and management companies

Interview with Jack "Tngey" Tingey

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I was trusted to mix and master one of the main event songs at the UFC (Leon Edwards V Usman UFC 286), the faith the team had in my ability made me proud and re-affirmed I'm on the right track

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently working on my own project which I started and performed a sneak peek in NYC, it will include all the greatest talent I have access too and have personal connections with.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both, I use both techniques depending on efficiency and what is necessary for the best outcome of the music.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: You will be completely satisfied with the result of my service, as I ensure that open dialogue and freedom for you to tell me what needs changing/tweaking/improving. At the end of the day, it won't be me performing the songs live it will be the artist so I shouldn't get in the way of what feels right to them.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Being able to create something really powerful from nothing at all, and also see the artists I work with faces light up when they know the song is complete and finished to the best standard.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: The most common question is how did I learn my craft. I am mainly self-taught and just fell in love with music production at age 15 or so and just got my hands on as many YouTube tutorials or videos and just kept creating, however I learnt classical guitar from a young age so I think that laid the foundations for me to learn music production easier.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: A lot of people only know me for engineering work because of my recording studio, and think I just hit record and bounce them the track. But when I demonstrate my ideas or advice they usually realise I can serve them even better with their song creation process.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I also make sure they are aware of how important marketing their music is, I've experienced too many times the excitement of the artists releasing an incredible song only for it to fall on deaf ears. It's a huge bonus if the artist is savvy to music marketing but not a problem if not, I always give help and advice from years in the industry about how to market the song free of charge.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Have faith that you have picked a top professional and do not be reluctant to share any criticisms or input to help make the song feel more right to you.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Laptop, audio interface, microphone, speakers & guitar. I feel these are the fundamentals to create most ideas that run in your head.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I've been a full-time professional music producer & studio owner since 2019, left college at age 18 to pursue music full-time and chase my career dream and have met some incredible people along the way!

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I'm strongly influeced by multiple musicians and genres and I view myself as a bit of a chameleon, I'm able to shift my preferences and tastes to the artist I'm working with as, in my opinion, it best serves them. However, if I recognise the artist is open for inspiration I'm not afraid to put some more of my personal touch on the project.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I'd love to work with Sampha, his production style, unique voice and authenticity shared through his lyrics tells me we would make special music together.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: When creating, just act upon your first initial instincts and don't try to filter or adapt what naturally inspires you. Lean into what feels right in the moment and figure out if you need to to mould it into something specific after.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I mainly specialise in hip-hop and R&B but rest assured, I'm versatile across genres and can deliver high-quality songs regardless of the style. Whether it's pop, rock, jazz, or any other genre, I'm confident in my ability to meet your standards and bring your vision to life.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Helping the artist get the song over the finish line regardless of what part of the creation process they're in.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Genuine input that I think will enhance the track or bring more personality from the artist into play, I will never get in the way of somebody's art or try and force it to be my own, I'm here to serve and maximise the potential of the artist I'm working with. I have no respect producers that just hit record and nod their head yes as it's the easiest choice.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I typically work in a linear fashion, create, record, mix, master, release, promote but I'm totally flexible and will work to whatever the artist desires as the end product is their art with their name on it.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: Mics Slate Digital ML 2x Shure SM7B Warm Audio WA87 Rode NT1A Lewwit Audio LCT040 Matched Pair Wide array of Sony, Subzero & Rode drum set microphones (both condenser & dynamic) Interface UAD Apollo Twin MKII Behringer U-Phoria UMC1820 Headphones Beyerdynamic DT1990 Pro Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro x Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro Speakers (Monitors) Adam A7X Monitors Logitech Cheap Reference Speakers Instruments D'Angelico Atlantic Electric Guitar Korg Minilogue Analog Synth Komplete Kontrol Large Keyboard Fender Sonoran Acoustic Ibanez Bass Guitar Ibanez Classical Acoustic Mapex Mars Full Set Drum Kit 5pcs Boss Katana Amp Hundreds of vinyl to sample Boss Looper Pedal Fender Strat Variety of wood based percussive instruments Wooden Shaker Other Equipment AKAI GX-210D (Tape Machine)

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I'm really inspired by Sampha, Chris Martin, Radiohead, Frank Ocean, Blood Orange as well as the production and songwriting abilities of Kevin Park (Tame Impala)

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: A fairly even split between production & recording studio sessions at my studio or remote mixing and mastering work. I'm mostly known for crafting a song from start to finish with the artist, without them needing to source any other musicians.
