Interview with Brotha Julius

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Child Of God. It was my first commercial release. It took an entire year to record and mix. I'm proud of it because the exact vision that I went for is what I achieved.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently in the process of recording my second commercial release.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: D. Renee is an amazing artist that I had the opportunity to work with. JP Engineerin, he's a fantastic engineer!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both. I feel analog offers that great feel that provokes our emotions to be attached to certain records. I say digital also because it's the new wave and artists are doing so many amazing things with it. Always creating new sounds and styles.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To give you my 100% in quality, effort, and writing.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Creating and building towards a dope finalization of a song. A lot of amazing songs leave much mystery as to creative process that went behind. Some of the simplest sounding songs have the greatest detail involved in them.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That rap is simple or ignorant. It takes true talent to fit different records and not be boxed into one sound. Also, it's usually a misconception that I only write gospel records.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What is the direction of the song? What type of lyrics do you want from the rap? What is the expected turnaround time? Are you able to be immediately reached throughout the process for approvals?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Be as descriptive as possible. The more detail you can offer will allow me to give you more exactly what you are looking for.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Laptop, AKG C414 XLII Mic, Apollo Twin Duo, Sony MDR7506 Headphones, & Portable Booth.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I have been writing, recording, and releasing music since 1999. Music has always been my passion. I have recorded under two monikers in my career. Once, under the moniker Big Pawz and now under Brotha Julius. My career has mainly consisted of ghostwriting for many artist. I released 5 mixtapes under Big Pawz. This included work with Chalie Boy, Young Buck, & Bohagon to name a few. It also includes an unreleased album. As Brotha Julius, I have commercially released one album.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Very raw, energetic, & attention grabbing. Many have told me that my writing style tells stories.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Lecrae. I find him to be a very unique artist that can fit into many different dynamics.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: You have to the first to care about your music. I can only enhance what you have already given me. Sharp, clear, and well mixed music always makes for an excellent recording process. If you have a great beat then writing is the next step and that is where all the fun begins!

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Hip Hop, R&B, Gospel, Spoken Word, EDM. However, i'm open to anything that I offer a successful fit to.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Writing would be my strength! No matter the subject. I can pen quality material for it.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I bring supreme quality when I am hired onto a song or project. We've all had those bad experiences as an artist where we do not feel we are taken seriously. Feeling as though someone does not care about our record(s) as much as we do. I NEVER take that approach when working on music for anyone. Taking the time to understand exactly what you need is the first step to my process. I strive with each song to be as captivating, original, and infectious as possible. All while maintaining the subject matter, direction, and style of the record.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Simply building around the idea provided to make a dope song. I typically write/record a rough edit for the client's approval of lyrics and delivery. I seek any changes that need to be made and make any edits if needed. Once the rough edit is approved then I proceed to recording the high quality final version for your record. I can provide either the full pro tools session or high quality vocal stems for mixing.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: AKG C414 XLII Large-diaphragm Condenser Microphone, Apollo Twin DUO, DBX 286S Mic Preamp Channel Strip, JBL 305P MkII Powered Studio Monitors, AKG K240 Studio Headphones, Sony MDR7506 Professional Large Diaphragm Headphones, Auray Reflection Filter with Isolated Microphone Stand, Pop Filter w/ Windscreen Cover Mask Shield Metal, Alctron Metal Wire Large Pop Filter, Acoustically Treated Recording Booth

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I'm usually inspired by creatives that have a love, passion, and seriousness applied to their craft. Music isn't a job to me. It's something that I truly love! I love navigating the process of finding all the pieces to crafting a fantastic record.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Writing is the most common type of work that I do for clients. Whether it is ghostwriting or actual feature work. I offer an eclectic writing style that can fit into pretty much any style of song.

  43. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  44. A: Typical they inquire about my process. I always ensure my clients that I take in the details of every record brought to me. I sit with the record, write, and bring my all to each project. You can completely trust that I stick to deadlines and you will receive quality work.
