Interview with Omri Malka
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm the creative director & designer of the Amsterdam based label MUSAR, and I work on 3 different music videos that excites me!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: It will stand out.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: To lead or take part in a creative process with other inspiring artists. I love my job.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Go with your intuition, write down all your intuitive visions and bring them to our meeting. We will extract from that something that is true to your creation.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Audio monitors, Drums, Analog synth, Camera, Beer
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I'm doing this for 10 years now. I studied Film, worked in major TV companies, I worked with dozens of independent artists on music Videos & covers. When Spotify opened Canvas feature for everyone I called all my collaborators to tell them the exciting news.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Edgy, unexplainable, versatile. Some of my works are Classic & subtle, Some of my works are Intense like hell.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Aphex Twin \ Sevdaliza \ JPEGMAFIA \ Son Lux \ James Blake. Because they are innovative and trendsetters, I'm very inspired by that.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Independent, Avant-garde. Mostly electronic, but not necessarily. My last project was a full visual identity for an Art-Rock album.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Working with artists & bringing their intuitive visions to life.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Visual identity. Its exciting to see the new meanings my visuals bring to a piece of music.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: 1. Getting to know my client expectations & previous works 2. Mindstorming with the client about the intuitive direction that they had in mind. 3. Offering a few paths 4. Making the visuals 5. Send for approval when its 50% done and get feedback from the client. 6. Get it done. 7. Minor Changes if needed. 8. Shaking hands, see you in the next project
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Visual gear: 2 Computers, Licensed Industry softwares (C4D, OCTANE, AE), Licensed all the wackiest plugins out there, DSLR Camera, Lighting /////////////////// Audio gear: Korg Monologue, Roland JDXI, Ableton Push + Ableton, Gibson SG 73', Fender Stratocaster
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired by artists that controls more than 1 aspect of their creation, "control-freaks", I admire that.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I Was the creative director of an album called BEYOND by Phonic Sonder. I had the pleasure of creating a visual world for the album. On the course of 3 months we created a beautiful Cover, 8 different Canvas videos for each song, Lyrics carousels for IG & Logo.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital: We should not rely on our past too much if we want to open new doors.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it doesn't take much time.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Make everything feel like it was made by choice.
