Interview with Roberto Pace

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm always improving my recording process and I'm involved in some personal projects that hopefully will be available soon.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: I would say both. Analog for recording and digital for live gigs. Recording with analog gear always give more depth to the sound. In live situations digital is super versatile and there are some very good pieces of gear nowadays.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: Great sounding and unique bass track

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Working with music is the best thing. I've met great guys and bring joy to the world.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: "I need a groovy bass line for this song. Are you available?" "YES"

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: For people that does "common" jobs is very hard to understand my profession. I guess because they see only tip of the iceberg and don't see how much work there is behind a live or production.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: What's their goal and what sound they're after

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: Be as detailed as you can about the style and sound you want for you song. Also leave some space to the musicians you're hiring cos they can add very interesting parts to the song.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: My Mayones Jabba Custom, my P bass, my Mac, my Apogee and a midi keyboard

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I've been playing bass since 2005. I've a Bachelor degree in Pop music and a Master degree in Jazz music. I've worked for many different artists and played in lots of venues around Italy.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: I would say a mixture of funk and rock.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: Bruno Mars is definitely my dream. He's always evolving and brings to the table new ways of doing music.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: One thing I've learned in my career is that every note and pause count. Do not be afraid to play just one note if that's what the song requires.

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: I've worked on many different styles of music. I've a degree in Jazz music but I mostly work on Pop, Rock, EDM and Funk music.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: I guess being appropriate and respectful of the song and the artist. In my opinion doing great music is what really counts.

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: I always do my best to bring a good foundation that helps the song both rhythmically and sonically. I also try to add my personal touch giving the song a unique flavor.

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: First of all I have a chat with the artists to understand their expectations. Then I choose the right bass and gear to use and record one take. Lastly I work with the client to fine tune the bass track and deliver the final take.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I've built my studio with the bass in mind. I've selected the very best pieces of gear to be able to work faster and better. I always record bass on two separate tracks. I use my trusty Avalon U5 for a clean D.I. and for the saturated track I can choose between the SansAmp GED-2112 and my custom Mezzabarba Tube Amp. I try to get the best sound right at the source to deliver high quality tracks that requires very minimal editing.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: Pino Palladino is definitely my hero. Unbelievable bass player!

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: My job as a full time musician is made of recording session, live sessions, bass lessons and music production. In the last 3 years I've focused my energy on bass recording sessions and working with many artists around the globe.
