Deric

R&B/Rap Songwriter & Artist

Deric on SoundBetter

Recording artist, songwriter, and ghostwriter with 20M+ streams, 200+ credits, and work tied to names like PnB Rock, YNW BSlime, and Internet Money affiliates. I specialize in melodic rap, R&B, and emotionally sharp hooks that feel major-label ready without sounding generic.

If you need melodic rap, R&B, or a hook that actually feels like a record, I got you. I’m Deric a recording artist, songwriter, and ghostwriter with 20M+ streams, 200+ credits, and work tied to names like PnB Rock, Fresco Trey, YNW BSlime, Hurricane Wisdom, Jace (Iayze), plus producers in the Internet Money/CashMoneyAP world.

My lane is emotionally driven music that still feels commercial. Hooks, verses, full songs, toplines, ghostwriting, vocal production whatever the role is, I’m focused on making the record feel honest, polished, and ready to release, not like a rough demo with potential.

Clients come to me when they want strong melodies, clean vocals, sharp writing, and somebody who understands how to make a song connect without forcing it. If you’ve got a beat, concept, or half-finished idea that needs real direction, send it through and let’s build something that actually hits.

Interview with Deric

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I wrote and referenced a record that ended up in a water brand commercial. Did the full topline and vocal structure. Seeing that song land a sync and connect with people outside the studio was fire.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Finishing my next EP and doing ghostwriting for R&B and melodic rap clients. Also building digital products like vocal chains and templates for artists.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet. I’m just getting started here and building my own lane first.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital for the flexibility and speed. I like working fast and experimenting. But I add analog-style warmth in the mix to give it texture.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Every record will be intentional, custom, and emotion-first. I won’t send anything I wouldn’t use myself.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Creating something that didn’t exist before and hearing the artist connect with it.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Can you match my style? Yes. That’s the whole point. I write so it sounds like it came from you, not me.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That ghostwriting makes it less personal. The goal is to write in the artist’s voice and make it feel like their own experience.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What’s the energy you want on this song? Do you have references or a style you like? Do you want lyrics only or full demo? What’s your deadline?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be honest about your sound and what you’re aiming for. I can meet you where you’re at and build something that feels real if I know the vibe up front.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: MacBook, Apollo Twin, mic, headphones, and a hard drive full of beats.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: Started out recording in home setups with friends and writing every day. Built a catalog, got credits, and now I’m full-time. I’ve been at this seriously for over five years.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Melody-driven, emotional, smooth but confident. My writing is reflective and personal without feeling soft.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Brent Faiyaz. I respect the way he balances emotional writing with clean, minimal production. I think our styles would connect naturally.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Capture the first take. Don’t chase perfection too early. Some of the best moments come from raw energy.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Modern R&B, melodic rap, and anything that sits between those two. I like writing for artists who care about emotion and vibe.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Melody. I know how to find the pocket early and turn it into something smooth and replayable. Hooks and toplines are my go-to.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Emotion, melody, and confidence. I make sure the song feels lived-in and true to the artist. I focus on phrasing, bounce, and vocal rhythm so nothing sounds forced.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I start with melody first. I’ll freestyle or hum over the beat until I find a pattern that feels right, then write lyrics around that feeling. From there I build the hook and structure the verses. I always record a full reference so the client can hear the delivery and emotion.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I record from a treated home setup with an Apollo interface, a quality vocal chain, and clean monitoring. Everything I deliver is tracked and demoed in-house so it’s easy for the artist to cut or build from.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Don Toliver, Brent Faiyaz, Chris Brown, PnB Rock, and producers like Taz Taylor and Nick Mira. I’m inspired by artists who know how to make feeling-driven music with replay value.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Writing full songs from scratch. I do a lot of hooks, verses, and melodies for artists who want something emotional, bounce-heavy, and natural. A lot of the work is ghostwriting melodic rap and R&B records with a personal feel.
