Joe Collier on SoundBetter

I am a mixing and mastering engineer with a diverse background in the industry and a top set of ears.

Send me a well performed, well recorded track and I will provide you with a clear, balanced mix where each element is given its own space to shine. I have access to a range of top plugins and the skills on how to use them to get the best out of the recording. When it comes to mastering, I use a trained human ear (not just algorithms!) to bring your track to life and compete with the top hits, not just in terms of loudness but also with clarity, glue and sparkle.

I have a first class honours degree in Music Production from Leeds Conservatoire and while I don't have the award winning credits (yet?!) that others have on this site, I do have many satisfied clients and a passion for music that I put into every project to achieve the best sound possible.

As well as mixing and mastering, I have a diverse background and am involved in a range of other aspects of the music industry as a composer, arranger and performer. I can slot in wherever I am needed in a project and have worked in a number of different roles in different projects from simply engineering or performing to overlooking the whole production process. I am a classically trained musician and bring my musicality into everything I do.

I needed a song to be mastered. I was seriously debating whether or not to do it myself. I am so glad I did not! Joe, did a fantastic job. After listening to the song he mastered for me, I literally said, "WOW". I will definitely be working with Joe again in the future.

I've played live with Joe countless times, and he always delivers. He's mixed and mastered a number of projects that we've worked on, and the results have been astounding. He is an all round great musician and a committed guy.

I can always trust Joe with my music to deliver a great mix and master. Many of the songs he has worked on have been played on nationally and international radio. He delivers with a quick turnaround and is happy to revise things if need be.

Joe has mastered tracks for a project I am currently working on. The difference is night and day. He has a real attention to detail.

Interview with Joe Collier

  1. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  2. A: I think my musicality is something that I bring that not every mixing or mastering engineer always does. Being a classically trained musician and having studied composing and arranging at university level I have a good understanding of what makes a good arrangement and how it affects the mix - arranging is essentially the first stage of mixing and without a good arrangement a song will never sound balanced.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: When I'm not working on other projects I'm always composing library music

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: That I put my heart and soul into every project that I do

  7. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  8. A: I'm more geared towards the "non electronic" side of things - styles like jazz, country, blues etc. are more my speciality than EDM, Rap, Hip-Hop etc.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: "I love the mix but can you just make _______ louder?" It's not always as simple as turning up the fader - it's about ensuring there is space in the rest of the mix for that instrument to sit.

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: Both have their place - whatever makes the track sound amazing!

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: What music inspires them. Any reference tracks they can give for the kind of sound they want to go for.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: The most common type of work tends to be mixing and mastering tracks that artists have recorded themselves

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Learn your keyboard shortcuts!
