Matt Wagner on SoundBetter

Professional Lyricist with a 48 hour turnaround time looking to step up your songwriting game. I have a songwriting degree from Belmont University and have developed my craft by writing a musical and hundred of commercial songs.

What's up! My name is Matt and I'm a lyricist working out of Nashville, TN. Having trouble finding that perfect lyric for your song? I will take your creative vision and turn it into an honest, concise, and commercially viable lyric.

I have written everything from fun pop bangers, to braggadocios rap songs, to emotional ballads and I love helping artists find exactly what they've always wanted to say.

I started writing professionally, six years ago and have written hundreds of songs for a diverse group of artists. My specialty as a writer is finding what a song's lyric needs to say and delivering a punchline that emotionally resonates.

Regarding my credentials, I have a BS in Songwriting from the AACSB accredited Belmont University and have multiple songs on hold for various indie artists. I also wrote a musical over the course of quarantine which greatly improved my craft.

I often topline for EDM and pop producers and will write and record you a complete song in either a rock, pop, or hip hop style for your tracks.

I'm also an accomplished singer and will gladly record vocals for your songs. I have a high tenor and can also rap and scream.

Finally, I also have 19 years of drumming experience and will program drums for your song in any commercial style. Just give me some reference tracks and I'll make you a professional drum arrangement!

Matt's probably my favorite writer to write with. Definitely pushes you as an artist to find the best and more important the RIGHT lyric. On top of always being a joy to work with he's just an unbelievably talented lyricist who never quits on the song until it's finished.

Matt's played the kit for me at some live shows as well! In the studio and live he always delivers the energy you need! If you hire him as a drummer ask him to see the "Matt drums and raps an entire song" special, trust me it's worth it.

Interview with Matt Wagner

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: About a year ago, I went viral by writing a jukebox musical based on Twenty One Pilots' catalog. I was the book writer and music director for the show. Although the project ended up getting shut down with a cease and desist letter, the five year process made challenged me as a creative and taught me that results will come if you keep pushing forward until the end. Plus my writing improved tremendously because of the constant revisions and arranging the show helped me dissect why commercial music is successful

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment, I'm getting ready to release my Debut EP under the alias MNERVA. I'm also finishing up an original hip hop/rock musical titled What's Written.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I will never cut corners when trying to finish a lyric/topline and will always treat the song like its one of my own. Also, if you're not comfortable with something that I wrote because it doesn't feel you I will happily change it, no questions asked, because I want the song to still feel on brand.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: There is nothing more cathartic than landing on the right lyric and I chase that feeling vigorously. Also, seeing an artist's face light up when I put in to words what they've been trying to say is exceedingly rewarding!

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: My career path has taken many crazy turns over the last six years but the short version is I started out as a drummer for a bunch of pop and rock acts before falling in love with songwriting. From there, I got really into rapping and started building my name as a lyricist around Nashville in the pop scene. Eventually, I put my skills to the test by writing a musical and now I'm finally releasing my own music for the first time under my alias MNERVA. Essentially, all of these different rolls have made me a very studied songwriter/musician and I am excited to use my skills to help take your song to the next level.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Lyrically, I'm all about promoting honesty and making a song feel like a conversation

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I typically work on Rock, Hip Hop, and Pop Productions.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: When writing, I excel at knowing what needs to be said in order to get the proper response from the listener and creating a tight, catchy structure to my lyrics. From there, it's all about finding the right words.
