Marian Nica on SoundBetter

With more than 17 years of experience, I've worked with many local and international artists but also for production companies like Netflix or vast worship music catalogues.

Based in Bucharest, Romania, I studied music from a young age, including 2 years of classical singing at the Romanian Conservatory of Music. I've been very lucky to work with a lot of talented artists for studio work but also live gigs in a myriad of genres which helped tremendously in understanding how sound should serve the music and not vice-versa. Starting in 2017, I am also a tech specialist collaborator for Audio-Technica Central Europe for brands like Audio-Technica, Genelec, Audient and others.

If you have a rough demo of your project please don't forget to include it as it will help me follow your overall artistic direction. Also, if you have other references you want to draw inspiration from, they are very welcome!

* All songs are different but all are equally important to me. My rate would change only if you have very big sessions, like hundreds of instruments/voices or if they are very long, over 6 minutes.
* For each project, besides the master file, I deliver group stems, acapella version and instrumental version.
* For only mixing service, I will provide a clean mix with headroom and a louder pre-master version as well.
* All projects are mixed, mastered and delivered at the resolution of the original files. If you have a high-resolution project, I will include a 44.1 kHz, 16 bit version as well.

Marian has been my go-to mixing and mastering engineer for more than 10 years, my music and sound have grown and evolved thanks to him and he always lifted up the essence of my songs and made everything... well, sound better! His all-for-the-music and all-in approach are priceless in this industry - and the intricate, detailed way in which he works on every track never ceases to amaze me. Whatever the best possible version of your song is, Marian will pursue it and mix it to perfection.

Interview with Marian Nica

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: I am obsessed with music so ...

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Be as open as possible. When taking a song to the finish line everything counts so don't be afraid to share your ideas and references.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: If I take my Audio-Technica mics I'm afraid there's no more gear left to take for me. :))

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: Fearless. I will do whatever it takes to make it sound as I hear it.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: Shania Twain! What an awesome singer-songwriter she is!

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Do you feel the piano is kind of low now but will be fixed later in mixing with a high-pass? Moove it up an octave and you will be much happier in the end. ;)

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: Pop, indie pop, pop-rock, electro and r&b.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I pay a lot of attention to details and to the general vibe. I am more drawn to how the song feels and grooves rather than wasting time with things that don't actually contribute to the music.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: I am very interested in understanding what the project is about, and what is the direction it has to go to. So, communication is crucial. For me, that is the first and probably the most important step. This is why I love referencing rough mixes and other songs the artist provide; I want to improve what you have the best I can, not taking it to another planet.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: I'm working 100% in the box as I want to have the most flexibility and efficiency. I monitor through a pair of Genelec SAM 8340, a RME UFX+ interface and a few types of headphones from Audio-Technica.
