Interview with JRob
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently producing a series of singles that I plan to release over the next 6 months!
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Denny White, William D Lucy
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: BOTH! Nothing can replace a warm analog signal but there are awesome sounds that you just can't re-create without digital means.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Make every chorus slightly different. Bring in a new percussion or instrumental element to give the listener something new to latch onto. Sprinkle "hooks" all over the place. Make it memorable!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop, singer-songwriter and the occasional EDM or Country song.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My melody writing and guitar-playing ability. While lyrics are almost always the "story" of a song, the melody is the subtext or "untold story." I quite enjoy bringing a track or set of lyrics to life with that in mind.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My own melodic and rhythmic sensibility. I understand when a lyric or guitar part needs to be simple/chill and when to really unleash and bring energy.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Send me what you're working on and give me a sense of what you're looking for. If you aren't sure, I can take creative liberties to bring the song to life.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a home studio, recording through an Apollo Twin, Neumann TLM-103, SM7B, Fender Tweed Reverb Amplifier. I mostly play electric through my SRV strat that I fitted with pickups from a John Mayer strat.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm a big fan of John Mayer's songwriting and guitar playing. Subtle genius in there. Same goes for Frank Ocean, OneRepublic, Tom Misch, Post Malone, etc.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Writing a melody to lyrics the client has written & carving out guitar parts for their production (including rhythm and guitar solo parts).
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My acoustic guitar, iPhone, a good set of headphones, Macbook Pro, and Apollo Twin. Most of my lyrical and melodic ideas begin as a simple recording on my iPhone. You can do some serious damage with a few simple pieces of gear.
