Interview with Kristian Øgir, EverloudStudios

  1. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  2. A: They tend to ask how i want the files, and i generally say that i need the tracks to have been exported from session start, so that all the files have the same starting point when i pull them into Logic Pro. And the files or tracks have to be named consistently and relevantly across all the songs that i am to mix. If the tracks need to be edited, then it should be done before i get them since its not included in the mixing job.

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: To make sure that the files that i or anyone else receives sounds good, are well organised and ready to be mixed, and don't be afraid ask questions if in doubt.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: Brainworx SSL 4000 plugin emulation (Could get my mixes most of the way just with this one), Soundtoys Echoboy, Fabfilter Pro-L 2, Slate Trigger 2, The stock Logic Pro Channel EQ,

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: My way into music production was through playing guitar and bass and wanting to record myself, in the end it was mixing that became my passion and i have now been mixing for almost a decade.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: I prefer when i can preserve the natural feel and sound of the musicians, but i do what i feel i have to do to make it sound good and will adapt to what the individual production and music style requires.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Probably the best advice i could ever give anyone is: Be careful with limiting yourself with rules and advice. In the end, if it sounds good... then it sounds good, no matter how you got there. Rules and limitations can really stand in the way of creativity.

  13. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  14. A: Digital. It just fits my workflow the best, and if its good enough for so many of the legends in the business, then it must be good enough for me :)

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I will probably ask about what vision they have for the music, and maybe what references they have for the sound they are after.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: The various sub genres of Metal is where my passion and primary focus is.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I strive to help bring out the qualities of the artists and their production and to help them reach their vision, so that is rather individual. But mixing is very much about making everything in the production fit properly together, so that it will actually sound like a song rather than just alot of disconnected elements.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I work primarily "In the box". Logic Pro X is my primary workstation, and also use Studio One when dealing with heavy editing i.e. drum editing, and Izotope RX for restoration (like restoring old vinyl recordings or clipped/noisy signals)

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: Mixing & mastering
