I really enjoy working with Steven- the voice instantly makes whatever you’re working on better- but the connection and energy really brings it home.

We held our breath through schedule s and illness. It took a little bit but what we got WE LOVE!! Steven's voice is most likely gonna be one of those that God willing you're going to be hearing on the radio sooner than later. His voice and guitar brought our track to life. Almost kills me to leave a review for him because next thing you know, he's gonna be the guy the publishers are saying "I've heard this voice before" because everybody's gonna want him on their demos.

Interview with Steven James

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: My debut EP! The first single comes out soon! Also, Getting a publishing deal here in Nashville.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: That I will sing their song like I wrote it for myself.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: Hearing the songs! I love hearing peoples stories and how they choose to tell them with lyrics, melodies, and music. Its the best.

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: That I can just hit record and sing perfectly. Ha! The voice is a muscle. Just like you warm up to do a workout, I have to do the same thing with my voice. Also, like working out, or sports, some days you dont have the same "fight" in you as others, but I have tricks to get myself in the zone.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Be honest and open with me! Tell me how you want the song to feel. Tell me "when you sing the bridge, I want you to be pissed". stuff like that. Its not being picky, or needy, I love when I hear it!

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: My guitar, a large notebook, a pen, Lots of water (for the voice), and my dog. ha!

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I have been singing and writing songs since I was little. Ive played guitar for almost 20 years, and now I am a full time artist and songwriter here in Nashville working with big name writers and producers. Every day is a dream for me.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: My style is real country, meaningful lyrics, and I sing every word like I mean it. You have to!

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: I would love to someday work with Cody Johnson. He is my favorite country artist. He's a real cowboy, a great guy, and crazy talented.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Dont do what everyone else is doing. Put every song on an island and do only what that specific song needs in order to translate the story.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Country, Folk, and Americana. But I love some country rock and roll too!

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: My strongest skill besides singing would be my mind for melody. Im obsessed with it. A lot of clients will give me some creative freedom outside of their guide vocal, and I have yet to have someone be disappointed!

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: I being a unique tone that makes any song stand out among the group. Its what brought me to Nashville and opened the doors for me in this town! I also LOVE TO DO IT. I love writing, and hearing other peoples writing and ideas. Then do my best to make it all work in a big way!

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: I love to get to know the client, what they want and are missing from the song and do my best to hit it out of the park! I take my time to learn the song, so I can sing it convincingly and confidently. I am also a full time songwriter and artist here in Nashville so if I feel something could be different, I love to offer my opinion and see what my clients think! What ever is best for the song!

  29. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  30. A: I have a great studio here in Nashville Tennessee just off Music Row! I do all of my client work here as well as co-writes and demo production.

  31. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  32. A: I mostly provide professional lead vocals for clients. They provide the demo and lyrics, and I send them back professionally recorded UNIQUE vocals either dry, fully produced and ready to mix, and anything in-between!
