Interview with Lara de Belder

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I started out training classically as a singer and always had an eclectic taste and a passion for musical theatre, pop, rock, jazz and folk music. I grew up with a rich choral background, went on to gain a first class degree in Music at the University of Leeds before training in Musical Theatre at the Royal Academy of Music. I've worked since as a performer and creative in theatre, film and concert and have also become more involved in studio recording, writing and musical direction. As well as toplining and writing for various styles and projects I've started releasing my own original artist material in the last year with Producer Joe Rodwell.

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: I love working alongside others and collaborating on a project so my first point is usually to listen and find out what the client is wanting in terms of style and genre and listen to any reference tracks etc to inform the writing style and vocal delivery. I will offer ideas and suggestions and happily try out a few things before getting stuck into the project, either writing the music/lyrics and then recording the vocals (including harmonies and ad libs) to be sent over to the client.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: Celeste, Melody Gardot, Jacob Collier, Erykah Badu, Dua Lipa, Jamiroquai, Lizzo, Robyn, Shura, Jessie Ware, Billie Eilish, Liane Carroll, Jamie Cullum, Amy Winehouse, Madonna, P!nk, Lady Gaga and Anaïs Mitchell.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: Vocal tracking & Toplining is the most common work I do. With a background including broad and extensive training and knowledge in vocal production, I'm able to deliver vocals across a wide range of genres.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: Home Studio setup for remote Vocal Recording - Aston Origin Vocal Mic

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Usually pop music with various influences/fusions including jazz & blues, funk, rock, RnB, hip hop, chill hop, swing, indie, country, folk, alternative and close harmony/a cappella.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: High-quality vocal performance, style, accuracy, artistry and sensitivity to the needs of the project/client.
