Interview with Johannes Lõhmus

  1. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  2. A: I will almost always ask for their rough mix or whatever version they're used to, before turning it over to me. I will also almost always ask for any references, that I should consider sonically. I also kinldy ask labeling all the tracks properly and clearly.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I started in the late 90's, have worked on analog tape and consoles with only hardware as inserts, as well as several hybrid setups I have had in between. Currently I mix In The Box and Occasionally have some masters delivered with hybrid (some analog gear) setups. I have been in the game for 26 years.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Less is more - we as humans can focus only "so much" stuff that is brought to our attention in front of the mix. Therefore having musical elements in the background to fill this front-to-back depth is a really important skill while producing, as well as mixing.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: I have the ability to work with a wide variety of genres - from classical to pop-rock, and anything in between. Therefore my strongest skill is to readjust, recalibrate and use the right references for whatever the next song or album needs.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: I bring the essence and life and movement to the song - whatever the song needs - if it's starting with the lead vocal or the drums, or working on that right guitar or keyboard accompaniment - having a ton of automation (if needed) - I always prepare the mix mentally in my head before I start doing any processing.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: Andy Wallace, Bob Clearmountain, Chris-Lord Alge, Jaycen Joshua

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: I mostly do a combination of mixing (and very commonly mastering the same project). If needed, I do vocal tuning and editing as well as stem mastering for clients that are struggling with getting that last 10-20% of their mastering.
