David is the best drummer I’ve worked with. I had the chance to do multiple recording sessions and have performed live with him as well. He has always delivered an astounding performance. He also has excellent sight-reading skills so he can easily read down any chart. I would highly recommend him.

Interview with David Castro

  1. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  2. A: My strongest skill will most likely have to be my consistency. This skill to me is a key role in most of my recordings. It gives a clear and definitive picture and color to the song.

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: With every song that I record, I always want to apply what is best for the song without compromising any key features that make the song unique. I make sure that what I do, enhances the experience and enjoyment of the song.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: My studio setup consists, starting with a dedicated studio room solely for the production of percussion and drum recordings. I use Shure SM57 Mics for the Hi-Hat and Snare, with Shure 604s Mics for the Toms, and a Beta 52 for the kick. As for overheads, I use Samson C02 Condensor Mics. For my DAW, I use Logic Pro X for all my recordings.

  7. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  8. A: My main inspirations are drummer artists Dave Weckl, Buddy Rich, Matt Garstka, and Matt Greiner. Some bands that inspire my work include Red, Breaking Benjamin, Animals As Leaders, Avenged Sevenfold, and DIsturbed.

  9. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  10. A: I provide any and all percussion tracks and live services to clients.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: Before any recording session, I thoroughly listen to the tracks, looking for any specific hits and/or progressions that indicate where the music is going. I make sure to look at the notes that the artist wrote and apply that to the recording.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: To be honest and straight to the point.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: My 5 prices would be a bass drum, a snare drum, a Hi-Hat, a Crash Cymbal and a ride. These to me are essential . Anything else like toms and extra cymbals are just colors and added effect to the main idea.

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: My career path at the time has been about the approach on being a full time studio/live performance musician. For almost 10 years I’ve been following this path.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: My style comprises mostly on fusion and progressive metal. These two extremes have helped me expand my musical vocabulary and understanding of how music can be played.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: I would be delighted to work with Dave Weckl. As a professional drummer , he has been exposed to many different bands and artists with unique play styles and sounds. His exposure to these elements allowed him to evolve his way of play over many years and has expressed that through his drumming. With that knowledge and mind set, I feel I would be able to learn many things. And his work as a studio drummer has given such experiences to understand and work on his own in the studio.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: My tip is to always perform FOR the song. Whether it’s for live performances or studio sessions, the song is always what’s important.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: I’ve always worked on a variety of music, whether it’s Jazz, Rock, Hip Hop, Funk and so on. It is better to be open to all aspects of music.

  27. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  28. A: The project that I’m extremely proud of would have to be my performance with the Miami-Dade Orchestra for their Video Game concert production. My role was to be the drummer. Our video has been shown around world and with music from the best video games and anime.

  29. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  30. A: At the moment I’m working on a new YouTube Music Video as the percussionist for the group 8-Bit Wave. I have been in work with them for more than 5 years now.

  31. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  32. A: I would highly recommend Luis Cancion. I have worked with him over many years as his studio drummer and percussionist. He has amazing work etiquette, with professionalism always in mind whenever he works with his clients. Any and all musicians that would ask me of a great producer, I would immediately recommend him.

  33. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  34. A: I would go with Digital. Having digital software helps keep everything in order and is always mobile since it’s mostly saved on a drive or computer. Now these days, digital can replicate exactly what analog would sound like.

  35. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  36. A: My promise is that I will deliver to the letter and/or exceed your expectations.

  37. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  38. A: What I like most is the ability to be able to play music that I love. Music has always been a passion of mine as a kid, and to be able to play most types of music and show my craft to the world is what I like.

  39. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  40. A: What type of music do you play? My answer is I can perform almost all types of genres.

  41. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  42. A: What are you looking for in your song? Are there any notes you would like to share with me to help understand what your vision is in the song? Any references you would like to show me?
