Interview with Sam Mailloux

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My next release coming Oct 1st. I produced, wrote, recorded, mixed and mastered the whole track. I got to perform the song at 2 of the biggest festivals in western Canada so it goes to show that the music I'm making is just as good as any big artist that is out there. The music I've made over the past year was a staple in my confidence and belief that this is what I'm meant to do.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: My personal projects.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not at the moment, I'm new to SoundBetter, I've seen it but never used it because I do all my own work.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both depending on what you're going for. Me digital mostly because of the music I am making I guess.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I will put 100% of my focus to making your track sound amazing as possible.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The freedom it gives me. I can schedule on my own time. Music is my true passion and doesn't feel like a "job".

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How did you get so good at music? Passion, hard work, dedication, lots of trial and error.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That I only "Produce Beats" or that Im only a "Singer". Im basically a one man band.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask them to show me work they have already done. What vibe are they going for. If they have references who they would like to sound like. How long they have been making music. What experience have they had in studios.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Have a vision ready with reference songs for examples of what kind of sound you're going for. For production I work best with vocalists when I have recorded vocals to work over. I also have hundreds of instrumentals in various genres that artists can choose from. Overall whatever a client needs in the aspect of production, mixing, mastering, vocal production I can provide.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My mac, Interface, Mic, Headphones, Keyboard.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started producing on logic pro at 17 years old, it has now been 7 years of producing full time. Everything I know is self taught from the internet and learning through working on hundreds and hundreds of projects.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Future, modern, clean, original but industry standard sounding.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Skrillex because he can produce next level in pretty much any genre, I aspire to be on his level.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Always have multiple vocal presets ready when recording so you can get a good sound right off the bat.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: R&B, POP, EDM, HIPHOP, DANCEHALL, HOUSE

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Producing

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Basically anything it needs minus live instruments other than piano and guitar which are the 2 instruments I play, piano being my main.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: When producing a song for myself i'll start a beat with an idea in mind and work on it till it's a fully professional sounding instrumental or until it's good enough to start recording vocal ideas, from there I will start recording melodies without lyrics. When I have the melodies I like I will then write lyrics to them, after that I record my main vocal, then backgrounds/doubles and ad-libs. Once I have all the vocals recorded I will start the mixing process of all the vocals and instruments/drums in the song. After a mix down I will master the track. Although this is the way I do it from scratch I can also produce over already recorded vocals, or remake/do custom beats beats etc theres really no limit to how I can produce a record.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I produce on Logic Pro X with an apollo twin Interface, Yamaha H7 Monitors, multiple 3rd party plugins and VSTs such as Waves, Izotope, Native instruments, Serum, Omnisphere, etc. I also have a NT1A rode mic for recording vocals.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Illenium, Justin Bieber, Skrillex, Drake, The Weekend just to name a few, there are hundreds of artists and producers that inspire me.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Instrumental Production, Mixing/Mastering, Vocal Mixing
