Interview with Biel Terradas

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: One common misconception about what I do as a music producer and mastering engineer is that it's an easy or simple process. Many people believe that with the right software and equipment, anyone can create a hit song or produce a professional-quality recording. However, the truth is that creating a great song requires a combination of technical skill, creativity, and a deep understanding of the music industry. It takes years of practice, experience, and dedication to develop the necessary skills to produce high-quality music.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: What is your goal for this project? What is your timeline for completing this project? What is your budget for this project? Do you have any specific requirements or preferences for the sound or style of the final product? Are there any samples or reference tracks that you can provide to help me understand your vision for this project? Have you worked with a music producer, mixer, or mastering engineer before? What do you hope to achieve by working with me specifically? Are there any specific challenges or concerns you have about this project that we should address before we get started?

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: My advice for a customer looking to hire a provider like me is to first take a look at my portfolio and see if my style and previous work align with their vision. It's important to communicate clearly about their expectations and goals for the project, as well as any specific preferences they have in terms of sound and production. I always strive to create a comfortable and collaborative environment where we can work together to bring their vision to life. And most importantly, I believe in delivering high quality work that exceeds their expectations and helps them achieve their goals

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: My career path began as a musician, and after gaining experience performing and recording, I shifted my focus to music production, mixing, and mastering. I have been working in this field for the past 5 years and have had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients and genres. Over time, I have developed my skills and knowledge through hands-on experience and continuous learning. My passion for music and dedication to my craft drive me to always strive for excellence in everything I do.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: My style is characterized by a blend of analog synthesizers and organic sounds that create a unique and rich sonic experience. I love experimenting with different textures and sounds to create a vibe that resonates with the listener.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: While there are countless artists I would love to work with, Erykah Badu is definitely at the top of my list. Her unique blend of soul, jazz, and hip-hop has always resonated with me and I think her music is truly timeless. Not only is she an incredible vocalist, but she's also a skilled producer and songwriter. I would love the opportunity to collaborate with her and learn from her creative process. I think we could make something really special together.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I specialize in working on a variety of genres, including Hip Hop, Afrobeat, Trap, and Reggae/Dub.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: I possess a variety of skills, but I would say that my strongest ones are in music production, specifically creating tracks with other singers, and in mixing and mastering. I believe that my ability to understand the artist's vision and bring their ideas to life, along with my technical expertise in mixing and mastering, sets me apart in the industry.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I would bring my knowledge due to my experience working with sound. I try to improve what's already there. Even If it's just a raw idea. I also bring a fresh perspective and creativity to the song. I'm always looking for ways to enhance the emotions and message conveyed through the music. Additionally, I have a strong attention to detail and technical skills to ensure that the song sounds polished and professional.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: For mixing, I usually start by listening to the raw tracks and making any necessary edits or adjustments to improve the overall sound. From there, I begin the mixing process, using various techniques and tools to balance levels, enhance clarity, and create a cohesive sound. For music production, I work closely with the artist to create a unique sound and style that showcases their individuality. This may involve creating new instrumental tracks, adding additional elements to existing tracks, and finding the right vocal effects and processing. In all cases, I strive to maintain clear communication with the client throughout the process, providing regular updates and revisions as needed until we achieve the desired result.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: As a producer and engineer who frequently travels, I've designed my studio setup to be flexible and portable. My control room features an old analog Tascam Mixer that I use to shape the sound of my recordings. To complement this analog gear, I also use digital tools that allow me to work on projects from anywhere - whether I'm at home, on the road, or in a remote location. One of my go-to pieces of gear is my UAD Apollo X interface, which provides pristine sound quality and allows me to record and mix with ease.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: I find inspiration from the talented artists and music production professionals that I work with every day. In addition, there are some musicians and producers that I look up to, such as Jacob Collier, FINNEAS, Dave Pensado, Monte Booker, and Kenny Beats. Their unique styles and innovative approaches to music production continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in the industry, and I'm always excited to learn from their work

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: As a music producer, mixer, and mastering engineer, I specialize in helping artists create professional-quality tracks that stand out in today's crowded music landscape. From collaborating on songwriting and arrangement to crafting the perfect mix and mastering the final product, I'm dedicated to helping artists build their careers and achieve their creative goals. With a focus on open communication and a passion for supporting up-and-coming talent, I'm committed to delivering top-quality results that exceed your expectations.

  27. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  28. A: I'm producing an Afrobeat album for an artist based in Dubai, and I'm also busy with mastering work for some of my clients.

  29. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  30. A: Both. Even though I confess I like to touch faders and knobs.

  31. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  32. A: My promise to clients is that I will put in the time and effort necessary to deliver high-quality work that meets or exceeds their expectations. My answer to these questions varies depending on the specific situation, but I always try to be honest and transparent with my clients. I provide them with a clear understanding of my experience and qualifications, my work process, the equipment I use, and the estimated timeline and cost of their project. I also encourage clients to ask any additional questions they may have so we can establish clear communication and work towards a successful collaboration.

  37. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
