Write My Heartsong on SoundBetter

Highly experienced versatile songwriting duo! Masterful musical storytellers/topline artists/vocal arrangers specializing in helping realize your musical vision!

Hi! We are Write My Heartsong (Katie Higley & Jessica Blackhurst), a prolific creative duo that has specialized in custom songwriting for more than a decade. Since the beginning, writing more than 60 songs the first year, it has been clear songwriting was our calling in life, giving voice to the unheard songs and stories waiting in people's hearts.

Creating songs that spread a message, tell a story, and convey the perfect sound is our wheelhouse gift and we love using it in collaboration with filmmakers, studio/music professionals, and performing artists.

Over the years we have worked with Dance Dance Revolution, written full length Broadway musicals, competed in American Idol, and collaborated on many films in many different capacities.

No matter the genre, sound, message or medium we have the versatility and experience to craft the perfect song for every project you bring our way.

Interview with Write My Heartsong

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Right before covid shut down the world we worked on a custom song for an amazing individual! The song had an incredible back story and Katie ended up sharing that very important message on the TEDxIdahoFalls stage one week before everything shut down. That song and talk alone has helped save countless lives. Literally, we have people still messaging us about it! It’s titled “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay by Katie Higley" Check it out on YouTube, it’s amazing! After delivering the message & song on stage, there wasn’t a dry eye in that auditorium. Everyone was on their feet cheering. It was incredible. Music heals, saves lives and that’s a beautiful thing!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Just finished a custom song for a couple celebrating an anniversary. It sounds lovely. I think i'll share the preview on our profile.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: At the moment, I would recommend Ängelsson.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: That’s a curve ball for sure…first choice would be Analog. The sound is just so authentic and real. Now with digital, there are endless possibilities!

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: We're 100% committed to putting our whole-hearts into every song. We want you to feel true joy from the end result of our efforts.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Helping other people give voice to the messages inside their hearts!!! There is nothing like finding the perfect words and music for a client, and there's such incredible joy in collaborating with other creators and sharing in that energy of combined hearts and minds.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Can you write us a song?!?❤️🙏🏻😊Of course, we'd love to!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: We make it look easy, and often write songs quickly, which often gives a false impression about the effort required. The truth is this craft is as demanding as it is rewarding and we don't settle until we feel a product is perfect which means we can easily work overtime or redraft literally hundreds of times before we're satisfied with the final result.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What are the feelings you want people to feel during and after they experience your song/project? Aaaaaaand… Why do you do what YOU do? We think answering those questions are the best part in how we can understand your heart, and discover your needs.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Realizing & manifesting your vision begins when you start taking action. If you have a message or project that needs words & music, reach out already! The best time to get started on your vision is right now, in this moment. Life is a gift, cherish the present. We look forward to talking with you!

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Jessica would want a rhyming dictionary, a thesaurus, scriptures, a pen and a notebook. Katie would bring her Kala ukulele, her ukulele Hymnbook she chorded, her Taylor Guitar, Wurlitzer grand piano, and her leather bound Rustico journal. (She can borrow Jessica’s pen when she’s not using it!)

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: We've been writing together since the day we met in college. That first week we wrote seven songs together, within a semester thirty-two, and within the year we had sixty two songs in the works. We recorded an EP, did a number of concerts, and wanted to pursue professional success with Katie front-running our music as a performing artist. However, life is a winding journey and while we continued writing our dreams and priorities shifted as marriage and children came into our lives. New perspectives helped us realized our great gift in songwriting stems from a passion for sharing empowering and uplifting messages. This passion makes us a dream team for custom songwriting, Broadway Musical authorship, and keynote speaking. But we're always looking for new projects and opportunities to collaborate and share the joy of great music!

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Eclectic & Unique

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Kari Jobe & James Taylor, because they all know how to evoke emotions that last for generations.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Layer up, it makes for a warm track!

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Singer/songwriter, Pop (ie. indie pop, electric pop), Country, Broadway Musical Scores, & Meditation Music

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Capturing the perfect feelings in words and music for the project at hand.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Love, light, hope, inspiration, and reflection

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Over the years we've learned that making magic together is a process of mutual inspiration. We've both been the one to get the genius spark that starts a song with words and melodies, but in the end Jessica's specialty is weaving the words together for perfect expression and Katie breathes life into the melodies and compositions. Then we always work together to polish the pieces until they capture the perfect message and feeling to.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: We’ve got a comfortable, relaxed studio feel. Furnished with a custom recording desk we hand made with real oak wood, looks pretty awesome if you ask me! We have our Yamaha s90 Keyboard, M-Audio BX5 studio speakers, Focusrite, and our Shure SM7B microphone that records magical vocals. We’re all about the vibe! We have gemstones laid out and essential oils being diffused to provide warmth and high vibes into our inviting space.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Dan Fogelberg, Sara Bareilles, Kelly Clarkson, Adele, Norah Jones, Regina Specktor, Kari Jobe, Carol King, James Taylor, Rascal Flatts, Shania Twain, Ella Fitzgerald, Ethel Merman, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Amy Winehouse, Coolio, Mamas & the Papas

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
