Over the past twenty years, David has become a fixture in Montreal’s jazz, Latin, and hip-hop communities. In addition to his own projects as leader – the Brazilian-focused Trio Bruxo and the song cycle Alicuanta – he has become an active sideman alongside a great breadth of artists, including Haitian hip-hop ambassador Vox Sambou, salsa pioneer Joe Bataan, sound explorer Matana Roberts, and Canadian jazz luminaries Joel Miller, Sonia Johnson and Gary Schwartz. Ryshpan has developed a notoriety in the Brazilian music community at large, having toured in Jorge Ben Jor’s band and recorded on Cézar Mendes’ highly praised debut album (produced by Marisa Monte and Mario Caldato Jr.)

Interview with David Ryshpan

Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I've become one of the top calls in the "world music" community, which ranges from Brazilian pop to Senegalese folk to klezmer and everything in between.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My versatility and my knowledge of global music.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: As a pianist and multi-keyboardist, my Mount Rushmore includes Herbie Hancock, Billy Preston, John Medeski and George Duke. For hip-hop, production and beatmaking, I'm constantly inspired by J Dilla, Pete Rock, DJ Premier and Jake One.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I've done everything from replaying parts and samples verbatim to arranging and orchestrating from demos. Most frequently, I add my versatility on acoustic piano and various keyboards into the sonic universe of the track.
