Interview with Jorge Medina

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: It Comes At Night. A band that allows me to do all things that i like to do. Playing guitars, producing, mixing, mastering, etc

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm involved in a couple projects for track guitars, produce songs, etc. Working in productions and creating new music for my mental health haha!

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Digital. Work in the box is the affordable/accesible way for me, The analog gear is very expensive, so much respect for the guys working in analog. I use analog things just in guitar amps for now.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I don't promise anything to my clients. I talk to them about the possibilities with what i'm receiving and the ways to get what they are looking for. I can't promise in a process that don't just depend on me.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: It depends, when i have total freedom to do things. Also i like when i have to mix a well composed/produced song.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Can you do this? How much does this cost? how many revisions do you do? I often answer in the same way, "Please lemme know what you are looking for, if you can send me a sample to check that and i will let u know if i can help you and how much it will cost".

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: the organization is the most important thing in these works. and keep in mind that the final result is determined from the scratch in the composition to the last touch on the mastering.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: I think my style is still forging. But i like A LOT music with dramatic moods.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Metal, Rock , Hiphop, etc

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Definitely the Editing/Mixing and Guitar Tracking.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I'm ever thinking about the "mood" of the song. I always suggest to my clients add things that enhance the mood of the song, details that can give more dramatic or aggressive mood, it depends of the song. But i like to improve that little details.

  23. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  24. A: Be in a comfort zone, is the biggest misconception in the life.

  25. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  26. A: What do you have in mind with this? what are you looking for? Do you have any reference?

  27. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  28. A: Computer, controller, interface, guitar and headphones.

  29. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  30. A: I have been doing this around 6-7 years producing, working with local bands and lately (around 3 years) working remotely with bands worldwide.

  31. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  32. A: with whoever that aligns their mindset with mine, i think the best place to work is where you can feel free to give your opinion, suggest things and be happy haha!

  33. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  34. A: Yes, don't think that anything is right or wrong, in music nothing is black or white. Do whatever you think is better for your song although the people talks it's not right.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: It depends, If i will start with a composing the first thing is pay attention for what the client is looking for, take some references, details, etc. The first step is try to have a range of bpm that i will work with, and start with the process making some melodies or riffs. I am ever sending new updates to the client, i like that the client be in the whole process, giving me feedback and talking about he think is better or what i should to change. When i'm in the final part of the song i know that i didn't waste my time and the client is happy. If the work is for mix maybe totally different, i start with a diagnosis of the multitrack with the client, i will let him know if there is any instrument that should be retracked or whatever, if everything is fine i start to edit, quantize, and tuning vocals if it's required. When i have done that i start with the mix, in this case i don't like to show to the client the mix in middle of the process, i like to be totally sure that i like it to send it. It has risks but i prefer in that way.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: Right now i have a minimalist setup. The main brain is my mac mini M1 with 16gb ram. My monitors are the Adam Audio T7V but lately i'm using more my pair of headphones Sennheiser HD650 with the individual calibration feature of Sonarworks with SoundID thru my UAD Apollo Twin X. I have controllers, amps and rig for Reamp, etc. My main guitar is a Strandberg Original 7. I have a secondary pair of headphones to compare between, it's the AKG k240 mkii.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Peter Tägtgren, Chris Lord Alge, Andrew Scheps, Jens Bogren, Drama Theme, Cookin' Soul, etc

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Usually to finish incomplete ideas doing tracking, drums programming, editing, mixing and mastering.
