Interview with Soundmatters

  1. Q: How would you describe your style?

  2. A: Laid back and encouraging. Most people have confidence issues and are actually more talented in reality than they realise. The look on their faces listening back to a finished mix really warms the heart.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Mainly digital. We grew up with Analog and none of us fancy going back to editing tape with a piece of chalk and a razor blade. Don't misunderstand, Analog still sounds great when done properly, and we have some really great analog gear we still use, but digital doesn't automatically mean harsh nowadays, and the quality is sooooo much better.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: A russian oligarch's fullly fueled "yacht" to get back home My other half (not technically gear, but very useful in these situations) A scuba diving kit A guitar A Bible, of course

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: Our main techy has been doing this since his teens, which is about 35 years now, the last 15 at a professional level. The rest of us are mainly song writers and musicians who have been playing for a similar, sometimes longer period.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: We have a good sounding live room with more than enough space, generally we only use half of it with a 5 piece band. A nice selection of quality mics, and some very tasty preamps. This is all connected through our fully featured 40 channel mixing desk, that is also used to provide 8 separate headphone mixes. The desk also features a further customisable matrix section, and a control section currently taking care of 2 sets of monitors and talkback. This is connected to a 48 channel TC interface featuring TC4000 technology and the same model used by Amy Winehouse and Depeche Mode. This feeds a PC running Pro Tools with an extensive set of qualty plugins and a touch sensitive control surface for quick access to most functions and mixing.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: After Covid, many people had time to reflect and write songs, mainly just lyrics. That has progressed to the point where we do most of our work for remote clients, putting music to their words.
