Interview with Macy Crawford
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am proud of my EP because it was the first full project I've put together. I was involved in every part-- track production, songwriting, recording, vocal production, etc. I feel as though my co-writer and I were able to put together a project that told a story-- diverse yet cohesive.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am working on refining my songwriting skills and expanding into new genres such as R&B. I am writing for others but also am working towards another EP of my own.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I am currently a college student studying music business and Spanish. I have been singing since I was 6 years old and writing, recording, and releasing my own music since I was 18 (since 2019). I released my first project, an EP called "Hamartia" in December of 2021 on an independent label called Tipsy Records.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is pretty mellow and dreamy. I like a lot of harmonies and write meaningful lyrics.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would like to work with Ariana Grande because she has been my biggest inspiration since I began my music career. I feel as though I would learn a lot from her vocally and production-wise because she is heavily involved in every part of the process.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: A tip I learned is to record different harmony takes at different positions in front of the microphone. This way, there sounds like there is a wider array of voices and it is easier to get differentiated qualities in the takes.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on pop or r&b-leaning music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is thinking outside the box. I can "break the rules" of writing music at times but it often results in something unique or interesting. In my opinion, always playing by the rules can grow boring.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring attention to detail and unique songwriting. I enjoy implementing interesting words or phrases into my songwriting. Hence my first ep being called, "Hamartia".
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I typically like to have a track to work with before writing. The lyrics and the melody usually flow together-- I don't generally have to do one specifically before the other. I then record various takes of my lead vocals and add harmonies once finished. Once my vocal takes are completed, I work with my engineer to comp and polish everything.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a Sennheiser MK4 Condenser Microphone with a pop filter and a sound shield. I am experienced in using Pro Tools and Logic.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Ariana Grande inspires me because I love her vocal arranging and vocal production. I love the immense layers of harmonies she adds in her songs so that you hear something new every time you listen to it. I admire Chloe Bailey because she is heavily involved in the production of her music and she always delivers a passionate vocal performance.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I usually write the melody, lyrics, and sing over a client's track.
