Qin Shi on SoundBetter

My passion is to translate your vision into a mix of its best potential shape.

Being both musician and engineer myself, I comprehend and highly value your creativity / vision. Whether it is clarity, depth, weight or definition, I will bring the missing bit to your music production. Let me know about your inspirations/ references and the vibe/message your music is conveying and we can start from there.
I am a mixing / mastering engineer / sound designer trained and graduated from SAE London. I had experience working as a live sound engineer and had the chance to work with some of the best musicians in the city. Meanwhile I am also a sound designer and Foley artist working remotely for my film sound post production company(www.sigmasonics.com) based in London.

Interview with Qin Shi

  1. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  2. A: I would ask about their inspiration for the project, their influences or favorite artists and have an idea of what sound they are going for with their project. Also if they wanna highlight any elements/ vibe in their music.

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: As for mixing: clarity, definition of various elements, wide stereo image, punchy and fat drum sound

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: I can create space for each musical instruments/ elements in a mix and improve clarity, making the whole mix pop out of speakers.

  8. A: As for mixing: 1.Check phase correlation of the stems 2.Mix buss processing or group processing 3.Process individual stem, including restoration(if needed), eq, dynamic processing 4.Adding saturation/ coloration, delay, reverb 5.Automation

  10. A: Nope sorry. I just got here.

  11. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  12. A: I go hybrid. I use digital processing (plugins) for precise and surgical sound treatments, metering/ analyzing etc. Then I use analog out board processors to add characters such as coloration/ warmth/ harmonic distortion to the sound.

  13. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  14. A: Your satisfaction is guaranteed.

  17. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  18. A: Put HPF on anything that doesn't need that low low. It would make the low end of the overall mix much cleaner.

  20. A: Neo Soul / Jazz / Hiphop / Deep House / EDM

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: DAW: Protools, Ableton Live11 I use RME Fireface UCX and RME ADI8 DS as my interfaces. SSL X-desk is my centerpiece of the studio, routing/ monitor control/ summing are done thru this gear, together with 2 patchbays on the rack. There are some of my selected 500 series modules, a lexicon reverb and other utility devices on the rack as well. See gear highlight for more detail. I use a pair of Focal Alpha65 and Hifiman Edition XS headphones to monitor sound. Most importantly the control room is acoustically treated, minimizing the effect of standing waves.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Andrew Scheps, Tony Maserati, Mike Dean, Dan Worrall, Pharrell Williams, Cory Henry, Alfa Mist

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
