Interview with Ben Goldstein

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: a combo of both. It all depends on the sound. But my first choice is analogue. I am a believer in the warmth of a good transformer.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I will love your music just as you do and will treat it accordingly. Otherwise I will not take the job.

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: the amazing sounds and songs I get to hear before anyone else hears them :D

  7. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  8. A: A) Often I have clients asking my to practically recreate their demos. I often find that the essence of the song is already found in said demos. If you want it to sound like your demo, just get your demo mixed. B) Editing is NOT mixing. Often I receive stems that are not edited. I will always check before I mix but please note that good editing takes time and is treated as a seperate cost.

  9. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  10. A: Whats your objective with this music? What music do you listen to How fare from live would you like your productions? What's your dead line?

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: make sure you are happy with your song, my job is to emphasise your song, not hide it under bells and whistles. make sure you are happy with your melodies !!!!

  13. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  14. A: an udu (African percussion), an acoustic guitar, la2a compressor, some acid.

  15. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  16. A: I started 13 years ago. I started as a singer in various small time bands. moved on to work as a top-liner for labels such as Warner, Universal, west one music, Netflix. I am now the vocalist for a 2nd line band, Hot Potato Band and have started my own studio production space in order to produce and mix. One of my passions is helping small artists with making music a full time job that can financially sound. I feel like the music industry can be so hard to navigate but but that doesn't mean you can't have a functional business as an artist.

  17. Q: How would you describe your style?

  18. A: agressive!! i am not afraid to try things/new sounds use unconventional items to make the sounds that I want.

  19. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  20. A: I would love to work with London grammar: big voice, music gives way for the vocals to grow. I would love to work with

  21. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  22. A: Use reverb with intention: reverb to me is a means of creating a room. when in doubt. listen to your song, imaging the room or place the the artist performing this song: is it in a wooded hall? is it in a bedroom? is it a candle lit cave? is it on a massive stage in the desert? - where is the artist, literally. once you have this image in your mind, start using reverb to create the feeling of this room.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: I loooooove working on singer songwriter style productions but somehow I landed in the Rock and Funk music world.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: i'm not a flashing player but I damn well know what feels good. I am also a pretty well versed singer and as a result I have high expectations of vocal quality. this means if I feel like something can be done better after hearing the tracks I will encourage the artist to attempt some more tracking. I will never give back something that I don't think is good enough.

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: there are a lot of producers out there. My particular objective is to create a production or mix that represents a moment in time. I am a bit believer that the best productions are the ones that remind us of a memory. I endeavour to capture that memory and invoke this feeling in the listeners through the production and mix.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: MIXING(only) 1st: meet and greet - I like to better understand the person I am working with, I find that some face to face conversation and a better understand of my client as a person will help me make a more suitable production/mix. NOTE: I WILL NOT accept a job unless I feel I can do the project justice. 2nd: I will request the tracks as well as as some various song references. often I want 2 songs that's capture and over all mix vibe and then some additional songs for feature instrument or vocal mix reference. 3nd: I usually ask for about a week to complete the mix. This gives me sometime to mix a couple of versions. once the artist picks there favourite version. we will discuss any need for revision then. I offer a complimentary revision PRODUCTION: 1st: its really important to understand what the artist is looking for and I always like to start with a long face to face meeting, wether online or in person to discuss the project at hand. during this meeting we will also discuss instrumentation, chords, vocals, etc. NOTE: please be aware that certain instruments may require additional price depending on a need for session musicians. having said this I am a good guitarist, keyboard, organ play and vocalist so all of these instruments are on me :D

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: I like to work in the analogue realm. Have comfort in the fact the your tracks will be running through analogue comps and eqs and reel to reel tape, generating the warmest sounds possible.

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: Rick Ruben is a massive hero of mine, his attitude towards capturing the artists desire for there music above all and thus making the best possible music for the listener.

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: I primarily work as a top liner, but over the past few years I have been doing for production and mix services, as a musician my self, I feel like i understand the importance of certain feature of music that can sometimes be swept under the rug during the production process
