Chris Seadon on SoundBetter

Mix Engineer and Producer based in Guildford. Specialise in rock and pop -- if you're looking for somebody to just take your song and make those special moments 'pop' without ruining the entire vibe I might be your choice. Worked on multiple local bands who are always blown away by the mixes and always looking for something different to work on!

Mix Engineer and Producer based in Guildford. I specialise in rock and pop genres - and mixtures of the two - but also not afraid to take your hardcore punk track and make it sound just as raw and disturbing as you're looking for. Draw a lot of inspiration from 2000s rock and pop punk stuff: anything mixed by Chris Lord-Alge I've probably studied to no end so expect that kind of punchy, radio friendly but still sonically huge sound. Nimrod and American Idiot come to mind immediately as the kind of sound I'm always striving for, but of course it all depends on whatever you're working on and I'm always happy to take whatever references you're going for and try to exceed them.

I'd like to think that I'm genuinely the best option sonically opposed to a lot of the entry-level mixers out there - but if we're being real everybody thinks that, and I can't pretend that there aren't a thousand things I could learn from all of the top mix engineers working today. What I can promise you is a great service - I'll communicate thoroughly and wholeheartedly until we reach a product that you're satisfied with. If I'm not a great fit for your project I'll be the first to admit it, but if I am then rest assured I'll put 110% into making sure the song that's in your head comes out on the record. Every time.

Interview with Chris Seadon

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: In an ideal world I'd be mixing everything on an SSL with Reaper as a faux tape machine. Even when working ITB I'm using SSL channels on everything and the vast majority of my EQ goes on inside there -- it's so much more inspiring to be hands on with faders and gain pots than be hunched over a computer screen, and that comes across in the final mix

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: Don't put 1000 plugins on every single track in the hopes that you're going to find some magical sound. Use the compressors, reverbs and effects you know inside out and you'll get a mix that everybody is happy with 10x faster. It's really just about being confident in your own balancing over any fancy equipment/plugins you're using.

  5. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  6. A: Perfectionist at heart. I'll never send you a half-arsed mix, I'll stress over every little detail until it's perfect. I'd say my biggest strength is using automation to bring out key moments in your song and give them the impact they deserve -- getting a good balance is really the key to a proper mix

  7. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  8. A: Hybrid setup mostly ITB but with some outboard EQ, effects and compressors to give it some character. Try to mix less with a mouse and more with physical faders, encoders and my ears - not worried about boosting something to a stupid level at some frequency if it sounds incredible. Always work at 96k, do oversampling on nonlinear effects and only the best dithering and resampling processes. Want it to sound as crystal clear as possible with no digitial aliasing getting in the way.

  9. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  10. A: Green Day and CLA without a doubt. American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown to me are the pinnacle of what a classic rock inspired album can sound like in modern production and I'm always striving to match or exceed those records. Also a huge fan of older stuff recorded all analogue onto tape. Bowie
