Interview with Sofia Pera Renauld

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of was La Pascoalina, a tribute to Hermeto Pascoal. It was a beautiful challenge blending complex jazz with Brazilian rhythms. I was a vocalist, and my role involved bringing both technical precision and emotional depth to the performance. It pushed me creatively and helped me grow as an artist, plus it was amazing to be part of something so unique and heartfelt.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Right now, I’m working on a big band album with a Fiverr client. It’s jazz from the ’30s with a twist, kind of like how we thought the future would be flying cars and robots, but instead we got endless fees and tech headaches. So basically, it’s a musical roast of modern technology, with a swingin’ old-school vibe.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I like both analog and digital. Analog gives recordings a warm, natural feel, while digital is super flexible and easy to work with.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: My promise to clients is to bring my full musicality and commitment to every project. I’ll listen closely to your vision, work with dedication, and go the extra mile to make sure you’re truly happy with the final result. Your music deserves passion and care, and that’s exactly what I deliver.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: What I love most about my job is being able to connect with people through music. Singing lets me tell stories and express emotions in a way words alone can’t. I also really enjoy the creative process; improvising, experimenting, and bringing a song to life. Every project feels like a new adventure.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: Common questions I get are: -How do you approach improvisation? -Can you adapt your style to different genres? -Can you help with songwriting or arranging? My answers: I always focus on the song’s vibe when I improvise, making sure it fits naturally. I’m comfortable with jazz, Latin, jingles, and more, flexibility is key. And yes, I’m happy to collaborate on songwriting and arrangements whenever needed.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: The biggest misconception is that singing is just about hitting the right notes. In reality, it’s about conveying emotion, telling a story, and connecting with the listener. Technical skill is important, but the heart and feeling behind the performance make it truly special.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: When I work with new clients, I ask: -What mood or vibe do you want? -Any reference tracks? -What’s the deadline? -Any specific style or parts to focus on? -How involved do you want to be? -What’s your budget and revision preference? This helps me deliver exactly what you need.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: I’d say find someone who really gets your vibe and cares about the music, not just hitting the notes. It’s super important to communicate what you want and be open with feedback so you both end up happy. And pick someone who’s willing to put in the extra effort to make the final product sound great.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: If I were stuck on a desert island and could only take five pieces of gear, I’d bring my Shure SM58 because it’s super reliable for vocals, my Audient EVO4 interface to keep the sound clean, and my laptop with Ableton Live 12 so I can keep making music wherever I am. I’d also take a good pair of headphones to really hear what I’m recording, and some portable acoustic panels to help keep the recordings clear—even if the seagulls decide to join in. Honestly, with that setup, I could turn the island into a creative little studio and maybe come up with some fresh island-inspired jazz vibes.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I first started studying classical singing at the conservatory of music, which gave me a solid technical foundation. While studying, I worked on various projects like La Pascoalina, an Hermeto Pascoal tribute, performed with Barlu Gipsy Jazz, jazz duos, and Latin American ensembles, and recorded for different artists. I also participated in a contemporary choir, which added even more versatility to my voice and musical approach. All these experiences help me adapt to different styles and deliver exactly what each client’s project needs.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: My style is a unique blend of my classical singing foundation and my love for jazz. Classical training gave me control and precision, while jazz taught me how to feel and tell stories through music. I have a clean soprano voice, and I love using improvisation and phrasing to make every song come alive.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I would love to work with Cécile McLorin Salvant because of her incredible vocal artistry and fearless approach to storytelling through jazz. She blends tradition with innovation in a way that’s deeply inspiring, and collaborating with her would be an amazing opportunity to grow as an artist and explore new creative ideas.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Focus on capturing the emotion and story behind the song, not just the notes. When a vocalist truly feels the music, their phrasing and tone become natural and expressive, making the performance come alive.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I usually work on jazz music and commercial jingles. Jazz allows me to explore expressive phrasing, improvisation, and emotional storytelling, while jingles challenge me to deliver clear, catchy, and brand-focused performances. Both genres let me use my musicality and vocal control in different but rewarding way.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skills are my musicality and commitment. I have a deep understanding of music that allows me to deliver performances full of feeling and precision. Beyond that, I always go the extra mile to ensure the client is completely happy with the final result, whether that means doing multiple takes, refining details, or adapting to feedback. I take pride in not just meeting expectations but exceeding them.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I bring a clear, soprano voice with a smooth, clean tone and strong musicality. My background in jazz gives me a deep understanding of phrasing, dynamics, and storytelling and I love using vocal improvisation to bring spontaneity and life to a performance when the song allows for it. Whether it’s a jazz standard or a commercial jingle, I aim to deliver expressive, intentional vocals that connect with the listener. I’m highly adaptable and always focused on serving the song and the client’s vision.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Once I receive the project brief, reference track, and any specific direction, I take time to understand the vibe and vocal style you're aiming for. I usually start by doing a few test takes to lock in phrasing, tone, and feel where nuance matters. Then I record the final takes, including lead vocals, harmonies, and any layering needed. I do basic editing and cleaning before delivering high-quality, ready-to-mix stems. I'm happy to do revisions to make sure you're fully satisfied with the final result.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I record from my home studio using a Shure SM58 microphone paired with an Audient EVO4 interface. I work in Ableton Live 12, and my recording space is acoustically treated to get clean, clear vocals with minimal background noise. While my setup is simple, it's reliable and delivers professional-quality results, perfect for jazz vocals, jingles, and anything that calls for expressive, well-captured voice work.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I'm especially inspired by vocalists like Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan—their phrasing, control, and fearless improvisation constantly push me to grow as an artist. Among contemporary voices, I admire Samara Joy, Cécile McLorin Salvant, and Esperanza Spalding for how they blend tradition with innovation. Each of them brings something unique to the table, and they remind me of the power of storytelling through jaz

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I primarily record vocals for jazz tracks and commercial jingles. For jazz, I focus on delivering expressive, stylistically accurate performance, whether it's classic standards or custom music. When it comes to jingles, I bring clarity, versatility, and a strong sense of branding to ensure the message sticks with the listener. I also offer harmonies and vocal layering to enhance the final product.
