Interview with BS El Ideólogo
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently balancing a mix of projects, including Stereo and Dolby Atmos mixes for established Latin artists, as well as mastering singles for independent talent looking for a competitive edge. I also spend time creating educational content for my community, which keeps me at the forefront of the latest audio technologies and trends.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I am always open to collaborating with top-tier session musicians and songwriters on the platform who share a high standard of excellence. If a project requires a specific niche talent that I’ve seen deliver world-class results here, I’m happy to point my clients in the right direction to ensure the foundation of the song is as strong as the final mix.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is a "no-compromise" commitment to your sound. As a Latin Grammy voting member, I treat every project with the same level of detail as a major label record. I promise professional communication, technical excellence in Stereo and Dolby Atmos, and a final product that translates perfectly across all platforms while staying true to your artistic identity.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love the "aha!" moment when a track transforms from a collection of recorded parts into a professional, cohesive record. There’s a unique thrill in finding the emotional pulse of a song and using tools like Dolby Atmos to build an immersive world around it. As a Latin Grammy voting member and educator, I also find deep satisfaction in the collaborative process—helping artists bridge the gap between their raw creative vision and a world-class, award-winning sonic reality.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you make my home-recorded vocals sound like a major label release?" Answer: "Absolutely. Through professional vocal tuning, surgical EQ, and high-end processing, I can bring that polished, expensive 'radio sound' to your tracks, provided the performance and capture have a solid foundation.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mixing and mastering are just "fixing" things or making them louder. In reality, it’s a creative stage of production. It’s about balance, depth, and making sure the listener's attention goes exactly where the artist intended. You can't just "press a button" for a professional sound; it requires years of ear training.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who values your vision as much as the technical specs. A great engineer shouldn't just "clean up" a track; they should elevate it. Always check their portfolio for "translation"—does their work sound good on phones, cars, and club systems? Lastly, make sure they are ready for the future of audio, like Dolby Atmos.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My MacBook Pro (fully loaded). 2. Universal Audio Apollo interface. 3. A pair of Focal monitors. 4. A Neve 1073 preamp. 5. My favorite pair of Audeze headphones for critical monitoring. With these, I can maintain my "Grammy-level" standard anywhere in the world.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is "Commercial Clarity with Harmonic Character." I aim for the punch and loudness expected in modern radio and streaming, but I always ensure the mix feels warm, deep, and dynamic. I don’t just mix sounds; I mix emotions, ensuring every element has its own space and purpose.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Rosalia or Jorge Drexler. Both represent the perfect blend of traditional organic elements and cutting-edge sonic experimentation. Their music offers an incredible canvas for spatial audio and immersive mixing, where I could truly leverage Dolby Atmos to tell their story in three dimensions.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It starts with a deep dive into the artist's vision. After receiving the files, I perform a technical check. During the mixing phase, I focus on balance, emotion, and clarity. For Dolby Atmos projects, I create an immersive soundstage that enhances the narrative of the song. I offer a transparent communication channel and include revisions to ensure the final result is exactly what the client envisioned.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I believe in a hybrid approach. I use high-end digital tools for their surgical precision, recall speed, and the limitless possibilities of spatial audio (Dolby Atmos). However, I integrate analog outboard gear when a track needs that specific harmonic warmth, glue, and "expensive" character that only real transformers and tubes can provide. It's about using the best tool for the song’s needs.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the emotional core of this song? Who are your primary sonic influences for this project? Do you have a specific deadline or release strategy? Are you looking for a standard Stereo delivery, or do you want to maximize your reach with a Dolby Atmos immersive mix?
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been in the industry for over [X años, ej. 10 years], evolving from a passionate producer to a specialized mixing and mastering engineer. My dedication to the craft led me to become a voting member of the Latin Recording Academy (Latin Grammys). Today, I balance my studio work with music education, sharing my professional workflows on YouTube and social media.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is often more, but intentionality is everything. Before adding a new plugin or sound, ask yourself if it serves the song's emotion. Also, always check your phase relationships—a solid low-end foundation is the secret to a mix that sounds huge on any system.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: While my background as a Latin Grammy member gives me an edge in Latin genres (Reggaeton, Pop, Regional, Tropical), I have extensive experience in Urban, Electronic, and Global Pop. I excel in any genre where clarity, punch, and modern sonics are a priority.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is my versatility and attention to detail. Whether it's a tight Stereo mix or a complex Dolby Atmos immersive experience, I have the ability to make a production sound expensive, cohesive, and emotionally resonant.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a "Grammy-standard" ear and a producer’s perspective. Beyond just technical mixing, I understand song structure and emotional impact. My goal is to find the "heart" of the track and make sure it reaches the listener with maximum energy and professional polish, regardless of the genre.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is a professionally tuned environment designed for critical listening and Dolby Atmos mixing. I use a hybrid workflow that combines the best of both worlds: high-end digital precision with selected analog outboard gear for character. I monitor through top-tier industry-standard speakers to ensure perfect translation across all playback systems. Universal Audio, Yamaha, API 550, Waarm, Neve, Midas, AVID
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialize in high-end music production, professional mixing (Stereo and Dolby Atmos), and mastering. As a Latin Grammy voting member, my work focuses on taking raw tracks and elevating them to commercial, award-winning standards. I provide a polished, radio-ready sound that respects the artist's vision while ensuring technical excellence across all formats.
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am particularly proud of a recent project where I was responsible for both the Mix and the Dolby Atmos Immersive version. It was a challenging production with many layers, but the result was a sonic landscape that truly enveloped the listener. Seeing that project get recognized within the industry and knowing I helped the artist achieve their most ambitious sound to date is incredibly rewarding. My role was to ensure the emotional energy was preserved while expanding the technical boundaries of the mix.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am deeply inspired by the sonic clarity of Serban Ghenea, the creative depth of Rick Rubin, and the spatial innovation of engineers like Manny Marroquin. I constantly bridge the gap between classic analog warmth and the modern precision required by today’s streaming platforms and immersive audio standards.
