Interview with Camilo Amaya Martinez

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: If you're looking for a mixing engineer, I'd recommend Daniel Cortes. He's a really amazing engineer who's done some really nice sounding stuff!

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both! I love the flexibility, ease of use and ability to recall stuff that digital allows, and I also love the undeniable changes in the sound that working with analog gear can give to sound.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: That mastering can fix a bad mix.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I did my undergrad in music with emphasis on Audio Engineering in Bogota, Colombia, from 2015 to 2021. While doing my undergrad I started working with local bands doing a lot of live sound gigs, and eventually started recording and mixing those same bands. When I graduated I applied to the Sound Recording Masters program at McGill University in Montreal, where I got accepted. I graduated in 2025 with an award for excellence in sound recording, and have been freelancing in Montreal since I moved here, in 2022. I've done location recording gigs, studio recording gigs, live sound gigs, mixing, and mostly mastering. I recently got hired at Le Lab Mastering, where I currently work as a mastering engineer.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: Rosalia, undoubtedly. She's really a generational artist. I really think that every project she's ever done sounds like it was made by a different artist, and yet it still sounds cohesive. In both El Mal Querer and Motomami there's ten thousand different moments where I feel like a caveman looking at a television for the first time.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Most of my mastering experience has been with jazz, pop, or rock/metal tunes, but I've been working recently with some latin/salsa local groups in Montreal. Recording wise, I've recorded classical ensembles, jazz bands, folk groups, latin groups, metal groups, traditional Colombian music, and many others.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: I like to think that I prioritize musical and emotional elements before I remotely think of anything technical. I think that any technical decisions should be in the service of the music and the intentions of the artist behind the music, even if you sometimes fell like you have to make decisions that at first seem counter-intuitive.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: A musician that really inspires me is Rosalia, the Spanish singer. She's one of the most revolutionary artists today and every project she has ever done feels like it was done tomorrow. Whenever I listen to her music I inevitably wonder "how the hell did she come up with this?" I really admire the work of Adam "Nolly" Getgood as a producer and mixing engineer. I used to listen to a lot of Periphery when I was a teenager and loved the way he was able to get amazing drum and guitar tones. As a mastering engineer, I'm always impressed by the work of Marc Theriault, a truly amazing mastering engineer from Montreal (and also my boss). He's done some amazing work mastering stuff for Celine Dion both in stereo and immersive. His immersive masters really make you go "wow".

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: I specialize in mastering, but I also get mixing jobs every once in a while. I'm based in Montreal, so I occasionally take recording projects, be it studio or location.
