Interview with James Thompson

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: Guys like me are here to worry about the technical stuff that is encompassed by the art of mixing. When it comes to production, focus on the feel and the flow of the song. That is the most important part that will hit the listener the most.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: I usually work on Alternative/Indie Rock, Pop, Country, R&B, and some Folk/Singer-songwriter.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Communication, organization, and creativity.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: I strive to bring professionalism and "punch" to a song. I never want to take away anything that is already in place, only add to it in a way that is pleasing to the ear.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: My typical work process when mixing, is to import all of the files provided, arrange them in a way that makes sense (groups, color coding and naming, etc) and start with some gain staging if necessary. From there I usually get a general balance going with just the faders, then I'll start to EQ things as needed. Layer the compression and saturation FX, etc. Once I get to a stopping point, I'll send over a reference mix and ask for feedback. From there I will continue working towards the goals of the client until we're both satisfied!

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: My studio setup has become simple over the years. When mixing, I'm completely in the box. I have a pretty diverse set of plug-ins that I like to use, eg. Waves, SSL, Harrison, SoundToys, Slate Digital, etc. For recording, I have a handful of microphone options including the Avantone Pro CV12 tube microphone, Shure SM81 Pencil condenser microphone, a Blue Bird condenser, and a few Shure SM58s. For monitoring, I have a set of Avantone Pro active Mixcubes and a set of Shure SRH1440 open back headphones.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: I'm inspired by anyone doing something because they have a true passion for it.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: I commonly provide mixing services and advice, as well as some production advice as well. I also commonly perform on recordings playing acoustic/electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, programmed drums, background vocals and some keyboards as well.
