Mixing & Mastering Engineer for Punk/Ska/Folk Artists. Go with a guy who gets it!

Mixing & Mastering Engineer, Songwriter. Punk, Folk & Ska are my favorite genres, but I also love Metal, Singer-Songwriter, Indie, Americana and Pop music.

Being a DIY musician myself and producing my own albums over the years, I have developed a critical ear and take a musical and creative approach to mixing and mastering. I understand how incredibly attached you get to your latest song or album, and how frustrating it can become trying to achieve the right 'pro' sound for the final product. My goal when working on your project is to strike that perfect balance in tone, volume and dynamics that makes your listeners become as attached to it as you are.

I don't just rely on experience, I also continue to research and educate myself on the best practices, techniques, tools and stay current with the industry.

I also offer lyric-writing services if you need help finishing a song or have total writers block! I've written hundreds of songs and played in various bands for over 25 years. Currently in the punk trio So Bad And Dumb and the punk duo Common Kid Flower.

The ornery black cat, Oil Slick - The ThrashCat/TrashCat, is the band & business mascot, he generally only likes fast, brutal, thrash metal, but he's always in the studio and gives a great second opinion.

Looking forward to working with you!

Josh helped me edit my project and then he mastered and mixed my project and made it sound 20 times better. He is reasonably priced and will finish your project in a timely manner.

    Thank you Josh!

Interview with Josh Hathaway|Mastering

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Working with passionate artists like myself.

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: I bring over 25 years of experience in being a songwriter, musician and producer in the punk rock scene. Being completely hands-on and invested in every project I've been involved in I understand how another artist feels about their song. I put myself in the artist shoes and dig deep to really make their song deliver the right emotion and modern sound.

  5. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  6. A: I am very inspired by punk rock music in general and throughout the decades punk rock production has become so amazing, very clean, tight and punchy. As far as professionals go, I am a fan of Jordan Valeriote, a producer and engineer who runs Hardcore Music Studio. Jordan has provided the most important and relevant tips I have ever received and implemented in my skills and growth as an engineer.

  7. Q: What's your typical work process?

  8. A: I listen to the rough mix sent over a few times and make initial notes about what I like, what to improve and creative inspiration that immediately hits. Once I have those initial thoughts down I'll switch over to listening to the reference songs the artist provides so I can really get into the vibe and make some notes on those as well and have that guide my process.

  9. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  10. A: I swear by my Steven Slate Audio VSX headphones, best investment decision I have ever made. I use the Logic Pro DAW on a MacBook Pro and a UAD Apollo interface. I use UA's award-winning analog-emulating plugins and Black Salt Audio plugins. For reference monitoring I use a pair of Audio-Technica headphones, AirPods, a bluetooth speaker, my phone, MacBook speakers and my car.

  11. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  12. A: Typically I have been providing full package services for clients, from editing the tracks, mixing the song and then providing the final master. I do offer discounts when a client wants me to handle the full project ;)
