Interview with Antonio Guerra (Aka Tony War)
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One of the projects I’m most proud of is the song “La Última Vez” by Sak Noel, Franklim Dam, Keid Sing & Tony War where I worked as a songwriter. It was a very rewarding creative challenge because we combined Sak Noel’s signature energy with a fresh approach to urban and electronic production. My role was to develop the musical idea, contribute to the songwriting, and shape the final sound, ensuring the track struck the right balance between commercial appeal and innovation. The result was a competitive track with its own identity that connected both on the dance floor and across digital platforms.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently working on several projects as a producer and songwriter based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, collaborating with both emerging and established artists in the urban and pop scenes. I’m also developing original beats and full productions for international clients, blending Latin influences with global sounds like R&B, afrobeats, and electronic music. My focus right now is creating songs with a unique identity and a competitive edge, ready for digital platforms and live stages.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: At the moment, I’m fully focused on my own projects and on delivering a complete service to my clients, so I don’t usually recommend other providers directly on the platform. However, if a project requires a specific collaboration (for example, live instrumentalists, mastering engineers, or background vocalists), I do have a trusted professional network that I can connect my clients with to ensure the best possible result.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I believe both analog and digital have their value. Analog gear brings warmth, character, and harmonic richness that’s hard to replicate, especially with preamps, compressors, and synths. On the other hand, digital offers versatility, precision, and speed, which are essential in modern production. In my work, I combine both worlds: using analog color to add life and personality to the sound, and digital tools for efficiency, control, and a competitive edge in mixing and production.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to clients is to always deliver a fresh, professional, and globally competitive sound. I commit to paying attention to every detail of the process—from the initial idea to the final production—ensuring that each song reflects the artist’s vision and has its own identity. I work with speed, creativity, and dedication so that the final result not only meets but exceeds expectations, turning every project into an authentic musical experience ready to stand out in the global industry.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most about my work is the ability to turn an idea into a song that truly connects with people. I really enjoy the creative process—from listening to the artist’s references to shaping a full track with identity and international quality. Seeing a production come to life and helping an artist express their vision is what motivates me the most. For me, music is not just about technique, it’s about emotion, and being part of that bridge between inspiration and the final result is the most rewarding part of this profession.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The most common questions clients ask me are: How long does it take to deliver a project? → Usually 3–5 days for beats and 7–10 days for full productions, with an express option available. How many revisions do you include? → Normally 2–3 free revisions per project; additional ones have an extra cost. Do you deliver stems or separate tracks? → Yes, with an additional fee depending on the project’s complexity. Do you work in different genres? → Absolutely—I specialize in urban, pop, R&B, drill, afrobeats, and electronic fusions, always delivering a competitive and authentic sound.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about what I do is thinking that a producer only “makes beats” or handles the technical side. In reality, my work goes much further: it’s about understanding the artist’s vision, enhancing their sound, and transforming an idea into a complete song ready to compete in the industry. A good producer doesn’t just program drums or mix; they also bring creativity, artistic direction, and the experience needed to give every project its own identity.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask potential clients: What’s your artistic vision and which artists or songs inspire you? I also ask about the genre and style they’re aiming for, the message or emotion they want to convey, and their main goal (playlist, label, live shows, personal branding, etc.). In addition, I ask if they have any specific sonic references or previous material (demos, lyrics, ideas), since this helps me create a result that’s aligned with their expectations and truly enhances their project.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice would be to always have a clear vision and solid references before hiring a producer. The more specific you are about the vibe you want to convey (genre, inspiring artists, message of the song), the easier it will be for me to turn your idea into a competitive and authentic track. I’d also recommend staying open to creative collaboration—many times the magic happens when we combine your vision with my experience, resulting in something even better than you imagined.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I were on a deserted island and could only bring 5 pieces of gear, I’d choose my Universal Audio Apollo Twin X interface, Yamaha HS8 monitors, a Neumann U87 microphone, my laptop with DAW (Ableton Live/Pro Tools), and a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50x reference headphones. With that setup, I’d have everything I need to produce, record, and mix at the highest level—even in the middle of nowhere.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been working in music for over 10 years as a producer, beatmaker, and singer. My career began in Venezuela, where I developed my style by blending urban and electronic influences. Over time, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with renowned artists such as Sak Noel and Lolo (Miranda!), as well as contribute to projects for both emerging and established talents across Latin America and Europe. I’m currently based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I continue to expand my career as a producer and songwriter, delivering fresh and competitive sounds aligned with global trends. My international experience has allowed me to refine a versatile, creative, and professional approach capable of taking every idea to the level today’s industry demands.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I’d describe my style as versatile, modern, and global. I fuse the energy of urban genres like trap, reggaeton, drill, and R&B with the freshness of pop and the power of electronic music, creating a sound that adapts to different artists without losing authenticity. My focus is on crafting songs that connect emotionally while remaining competitive in the international industry.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with artists like J Balvin or Rauw Alejandro, because they represent the forefront of global urban music and are always open to experimenting with new sounds. Their creative vision and ability to connect with international audiences would be the perfect setting for me to bring my versatility as a producer and create a fresh, innovative, and globally competitive sound.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: A key production tip: focus on the idea and emotion before technical perfection. A track that conveys feeling will always connect more than a flawless mix with no soul. Once the vibe is solid, use technique to enhance it. Also, test your music on different systems headphones, monitors, car speakers because a great song must translate everywhere.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work in urban and contemporary music, especially genres like trap, reggaeton, R&B, drill, and afrobeats. I also dive into pop and EDM, blending electronic and Latin influences to create a fresh, competitive sound. My versatility allows me to adapt to different styles according to the artist’s vision, always delivering authenticity and industry-level quality.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is blending artistic creativity with high-level technical production. I have the ability to turn an idea into a complete song, delivering original beats, professionally processed vocals, and a versatile sound that adapts to both urban and global genres without losing authenticity. This combination allows me to provide music ready to compete in the international market.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring identity, freshness, and industry-level quality to every song. My goal is to give each track a unique stamp with original instrumentals, memorable melodies, and polished vocals that meet global standards. Beyond the technical production, I add creativity in composition, arrangements, and toplines that connect with listeners and enhance the artist’s vision. My focus is always to transform an idea into a competitive, authentic track ready to stand out on digital platforms and live stages.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My workflow starts with understanding the client’s vision: references, style, and goals. From there, I develop the musical idea by creating a beat or instrumental foundation that reflects their identity. Next, I move on to writing melodies and lyrics (if needed), and to recording and editing vocals with the best artistic and technical treatment. Once the direction is defined, I arrange and produce the full track, paying close attention to every detail in the mix to achieve a fresh, competitive sound. I deliver a first version, include revisions based on client feedback, and finally provide a track ready for release on digital platforms or live performance. My goal at every stage is to combine creativity, efficiency, and professional quality, ensuring each song remains authentic while meeting global industry standards.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio is built around a Universal Audio Apollo Twin X interface, which ensures pristine recording and industry-level sound quality. For monitoring, I rely on Adam Audio A7X and Yamaha HS8 speakers, complemented by Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro and Sennheiser HD 650 headphones for critical listening. For vocals, I use microphones such as the Neumann TLM 103, AKG C414 XLII, and Shure SM7B, depending on the tone and character needed. I also work with MIDI controllers like the Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S49 and Arturia KeyLab 61 MkII, allowing me to create original beats and melodies with precision. On the software side, I produce mainly in Ableton Live and Logic Pro X, supported by industry-standard plug-ins from UAD, FabFilter, iZotope, Waves, Soundtoys, and Native Instruments Komplete. The studio is acoustically treated with Auralex panels and GIK bass traps, ensuring accurate mixes and polished final results. This setup allows me to deliver high-quality productions, from beats to full tracks, ready for release on all major platforms. Among my biggest influences are Timbaland, Pharrell Williams, Skrillex, Diplo, Tainy, and Bizarrap, as well as visionaries like Rick Rubin and Quincy Jones for their timeless approach to production. I also take inspiration from Latin innovators such as Sak Noel and genre-bending artists like Rosalía, who prove that authenticity and experimentation can coexist at the highest level.
