Interview with Sam Killeen
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been playing guitar for over 20 years, and throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of touring the world as a session guitarist. I've worked with artists like Xzibit, James Vincent McMorrow, Lisa Hannigan, and Gemma Hayes, which has given me invaluable experience in both live performance and studio work. My journey has taken me across many genres, from hip-hop, folk and indie to rock and pop, and has allowed me to develop a deep understanding of how to craft parts that support the artist’s vision. I’ve always approached each project with a mix of creativity, technical skill, and emotional connection to the music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is knowing how to serve the song—both musically and emotionally. I have a strong ear for arrangement, tone, and dynamics, but what sets me apart is my ability to connect with the heart of a track and play in a way that supports the story. Whether it’s subtle textures or standout hooks, I know when to play—and just as importantly, when not to.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: work across a wide variety of styles, both live and in the studio. My session work spans pop, rock, folk, jazz, metal, hip hop, electronic, and traditional Irish music. I love adapting my playing to suit different genres—whether it’s crafting ambient textures for an electronic track, heavy riffs for a metal project, or subtle acoustic work for a folk ballad. No matter the style, my goal is always the same: to support the song and elevate the artist’s vision.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a deep sensitivity to the meaning and emotion behind a song. To me, the story is everything—so before I record a single note, I always ask clients to share what the song is about and what it means to them. That emotional context allows me to align with the heart of the music and respond in a way that feels genuine and supportive. My goal is to add guitar parts that don’t just sound good, but feel right—serving the song’s message and enhancing its impact.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process starts with a chat about your vision—feel, references, what the song needs. Once I have the track and any notes, I’ll record multiple guitar parts (rhythmic, melodic, ambient—whatever fits), using tones and textures that suit the vibe. I’ll send over stems for feedback, and we can tweak as needed until you’re fully happy. I always aim for quick turnaround, open communication, and parts that truly serve the song.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is designed for capturing high-quality guitar tones quickly and creatively. I record through Universal Audio interfaces and high-end preamps, paired with a selection of premium microphones. For guitars, I use Lowden acoustics and a range of electric guitars through Victory Amps, Strymon pedals, and custom pedalboard setups for versatile tones—from clean and ambient to gritty and expressive. I track in Ableton and my room is acoustically treated for detailed, mix-ready recordings.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do is recording high-quality, layered guitar parts—both acoustic and electric—for artists, producers, and composers working remotely. This often includes rhythm tracks, melodic hooks, ambient textures, and solos that are tailored to the song’s mood and arrangement. I also frequently build full guitar arrangements that complement vocals and help bring a track to life.
