Interview with Julia Brassel

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: My promise to my clients is to fully invest myself in your project, delivering a reliable and respectful service. I understand that your music is your passion, a creation you've poured your heart into. I promise to treat it with the same love and respect you do, dedicating my skills and creativity to enhance it while preserving its essence. You can trust in my commitment to quality, communication, and respect for your vision throughout our collaboration.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: When I meet with prospective clients, my primary goal is to understand their project and vision as deeply as possible. Here are some questions I typically ask: -Can you tell me more about your project? What's the story or idea behind it? -What feelings or emotions do you want to convey through this piece of music? -Are there any songs or artists that inspire you or influence your music? Can they serve as a reference for the sound you're aiming for? -What is your vision for my contribution to the project? Do you have specific ideas for the vocal or saxophone parts, or are you looking for me to bring my own creative ideas? -What are your expectations for the project timeline and communication? By asking these questions, I aim to align my understanding with your vision, ensuring a successful and satisfying collaboration.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: My advice for customers looking to hire a music professional like myself would be to trust your instincts. If you feel a positive connection with a provider and their work resonates with you, that's a strong indicator of a good fit. Additionally, I would encourage you to remain open to new experiences and individuals. Sometimes, the most surprising collaborations yield the most outstanding results. Don't be afraid to explore outside your comfort zone - you might discover a sound you never knew you loved.

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: My career path in music began in elementary school when I first picked up a guitar. This was my introduction to a whole new world of expression and creativity. By the age of 12, I had started playing the saxophone, which gave me a powerful outlet for expressing myself and being heard, a fun contrast to my naturally quiet disposition. Over the years, I became increasingly involved in playing in bands, singing, and songwriting. Interestingly, my initial career path led me to veterinary medicine, a field in which I found considerable success. However, my inner calling for music never waned. The pull towards music grew stronger over the years, fueled by my love for playing, singing, and writing songs. Eventually, I made the decision to become a self-employed musician, which has allowed me to fully embrace my identity as a creative. I've been living this dream and honing my skills for over 3 years now, and I can confidently say that I've found my true calling in music.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: My style can be described as a unique blend of quirky, otherworldly, catchy, airy, emotional, and sweet elements. Whether I'm delivering a vocal performance or playing the saxophone, I strive to imbue each note with emotion and individuality. This mix of characteristics gives my music a distinctive flavor, resulting in performances that not only stand out but also connect deeply with listeners. My style is a reflection of my diverse musical influences and personal creativity, adding a unique touch to every project I undertake.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: One music production tip I can share is this: "If you like it, it's done." It's crucial to create music that resonates with you, rather than trying to cater to an imaginary audience. People's tastes vary greatly, and what's popular can shift quickly. If you stay true to your own musical instincts and create something you genuinely enjoy, the authenticity of your work will shine through, and that's what truly connects with listeners.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: I typically work on a wide range of music. My own music falls within the progressive pop genre, but I also collaborate frequently with grunge and Latin bands. Recently, I've even ventured into the world of symphonic metal, providing background vocals for a project. I'm open to all genres and always eager to explore new musical styles and contexts. This versatility allows me to adapt to the unique needs of each project, bringing diverse influences and fresh ideas to the table.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: My strongest skill is undoubtedly my ability to generate creative ideas spontaneously, regardless of whether I'm working with saxophone or vocals. Music is a constant source of inspiration for me, and this allows me to conjure melodies and vocal lines even in the absence of specific guidance. Coupled with my extensive technical skills in both singing and saxophone playing, this creativity ensures that I can always contribute something valuable and unique to a project.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: What I bring to a song is an original and unique contribution that's born out of deep respect for the music and its creator. I approach each project as if it were my own, investing time and energy to understand its essence and to align my contributions with your vision. I believe that every song, like every person, is unique, and it deserves an approach that honors its distinct character. My goal is to enhance your music with my vocals and saxophone, while preserving its original spirit and highlighting what makes it unique.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: My typical work process begins with gathering any available instrumentals and guidance from you. The next step involves discussing visions and demos to ensure we're aligned on the musical direction. If you don't have a specific idea in mind, I'll spend some time jamming and feeling out the music to see what might suit it best. Once we have a shared understanding, I take things to my unique studio setup in a World War II bunker, where I have the space and solitude to truly immerse myself in the music. Here, I experiment and play around with different ideas, before formulating a concrete concept and proceeding to record the parts. When it comes to harmonies, I use the piano and the key of the song to guide me. I firmly believe in aligning the harmonies with the song's overall feeling and your/mine personal taste. By incorporating your vision with my creative interpretation, I aim to contribute something truly special to each project.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: My studio is located in a repurposed World War II bunker, a space that offers a unique atmosphere for creativity and focus. Being shut off from the outside world and its distractions, it's the perfect environment for deep musical immersion. Though it lacks internet connectivity, the bunker offers ample space for recording, allowing me to fully engage with the music without interruption. This unique setup contributes to the distinctive character and quality of my work.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Artists like Kate Bush and Supertramp, along with other bands from the 70s era, greatly inspire my work. Kate Bush's inventive use of her voice, her emotional depth, and her ability to weave intricate, storytelling lyrics have been a significant influence on my own approach to singing and songwriting. Supertramp's blend of progressive rock with pop sensibilities, their distinctive use of the saxophone, and their penchant for strong melodies and harmonies have deeply informed my musical style, especially my saxophone playing. The overall creative energy, risk-taking, and diverse soundscape of the 70s music scene continue to fuel my creativity and push me to explore new musical frontiers.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: The most common work I do for my clients involves recording and adding lead or background vocals and saxophone parts to their music. This can range from creating unique, heartfelt saxophone solos and riffs to providing harmonious vocal performances. I excel at both interpreting my clients' vision faithfully and bringing my own creative ideas to a project when desired. Whether it's a soulful vocal line, an otherworldly saxophone solo, or rich, layered harmonies, I'm committed to enhancing each piece of music I work on, ensuring it resonates with both the artist and their audience.
