Interview with Joël Kalt

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Having happy customers and live for the music.

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: How fast can you do it. Well - for sure it takes some time to mix and master a track. I don't want to rush as much, as my primary goal is to get the customer happy and therefore I want to take the time for your result.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: Do you have some recordings already, or reference tracks and whats the story of the song. Clarify the details and let's keep in touch while working so we can accomplish the sound you like.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Having great recordings helps a lot, as mixing and mastering is not a magician work. We can do a lot with the todays tools, but the essential stems should be recorded the way you want to have the sound.

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I started while I was still on school, 15 years ago with some small workshops for audio and later on get some freelancer jobs for live events. Now working part-time mixing and mastering and some live gigs in between.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: Swiss-Style love the hard and nailing songs like metal and rock.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: Sabaton, Nightwish or those great players would be very cool, but a long travel to get there. So they still be my inspiration.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Listen to the music and listen to your feeling. Enjoy what you do and you will see.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Typically on metal and rock also in live concerts als live engineer, but also on pop songs with an a cappella ensemble with 6-50 people.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: I'm sure to have the understanding from the client and listen to the music and get along the track / song by digging into the session and always try to get the best possible result.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I want to tell the story from the customer and get the spark they want with the song.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: Typically I listen to a reference track, to get the band / producer known, and then start by aranging all stems in ProTools for the mixing session. Also hav a chat with the customer, to get his idea and what story they wanna tell with the song.for mixing, generally EQ and Compression in Mono and Reverb / Delay in Stereo listening. Also considering always switching between solo and full set listening, to get the feeling how the current instrument / stem is alining with the whole track. so it's a mix of all, to get to that final mix that rocks.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: My Studio is primary done for mixing and mastering, so there is no recording area, cause I focus mainly on mixing and mastering. Working on ProTools, with different plugins, and overear monitors or also Yamaha NS-10M Studio Speakers for reference.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: I'm super impressed by Hans Zimmer in film scoring music, but aside all big players like Papa Roach, Metallica, Slipknot and many more. I'm like open minded and not bound to a specific genre, cause all of them are great the way they are.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: Generally mixing and mastering is my primary work I do. But I also want to support my clients to get their sound and tell their story with the music the produce. So I focus on mixing the tracks to tell that story.
