Angus Clark on SoundBetter

Guitarist for Grammy-winning and Platinum-selling artists will create guitar parts and record tracks for your project.

Hi, I'm Angus Clark, guitarist based in the New York area. I've recorded electric guitar, acoustic guitar, nylon-string guitar, and electric sitar parts for numerous Platinum-selling albums, as well as corporate clients, video games, and so much more. I work with singer-songwriters, producers, bands and solo artists primarily in the rock, pop rock, and progressive genres.

I can arrange the guitar parts for your project, or recreate your demo arrangements precisely. I can read music as well. All tracks are recorded at whatever resolution you specify and delivered in whatever format you wish. My studio features hi-end mic preamps, quality microphones, vintage amps and guitars. Tracks can be delivered blended or separately, processed, dry, or both. Let's make something together!

Interview with Angus Clark

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: DareDevil Squadron's "Last Resort" single. I was co-writer, co-producer, and co-guitarist. Great band and great friends to be working with.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: A Rival Sons inspired track.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Brian Griffin

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both because our ears will tell us when we've got it right.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: We'll both be happy with the results.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I love making music in collaboration with others.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Q: How'd you do that? A: Carefully

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That it's easy.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Are you open to suggestions?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: If you have a clear idea or reference point for what you want, don't hesitate to communicate it as clearly as possible.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: An acoustic guitar, a bunch of sets of strings, a string winder/clipper, an allen wrench, and a solar powered recording unit.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I have been doing this for over 30 years. After completing a Master's Degree in Music I starting working with a Prog-Rock band signed to BMG records. Subsequent to that I was hired by Kitaro, with whom I recorded 4 albums and toured for 5 years. Then I did a bunch of songwriting and singer-songwriter projects before landing the Trans-Siberian Orchestra gig. I have recorded on three TSO albums and have been the touring guitarist for over 20 years. I have also worked with Cher, Joe Lynn Turner, Anna Phoebe (Jetrho Tull), and many others, in addition to recording projects for corporate clients and video games.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Hendrix meets Tony Iommi meets David Gilmour meets Ritchie Blackmore

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Ozzy Osbourne. He's the man.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: As a guitarist it is best to always provide three tracks of each performance: DI, dry, and processed.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Symphonic rock and new age

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Listening.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring 30 years of experience working with name acts, aspiring singer-songwriters, and rock bands where the sound and texture is just as important as the performance.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I usually receive a demo or partially completed bed track as stems, which I load into a session. Once I have reviewed the track I have a consultation session with the client to get their vision for the song. I do an initial pass and submit an mp3 of a rough mix for review. If the client is happy with the direction I will then proceed with final tracking.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I use Logic Pro X running on a Mac Studio with a UA interface. I can record electric guitar or electric sitar direct using a Fractal AXE-FXIII, or using one of my vintage Marshall amplifiers and a combination of dynamic and ribbon microphones. I record my acoustic using a pair of high end microphones. I record nylon string direct using a Godin Multi-AC.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Tim Pierce, David Gilmour, Tony Iommi, Dann Huff, John Shanks

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Most often I am engaged to arrange and record a solo, a rhythm part, and a "color" part for rock or pop-rock songs, where the song arrangement is already mostly done.
