Interview with El Altillo

Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: In production, before any tool or knowledge, the most important thing is... Connect with the song and understand the artist. If those two things don't happen there is no possible way to achieve a successful production.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I am lucky to be called upon to work in many styles and lately they are styles like Rock, Numetal, Blues, TechHouse, Latin Music
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Recording, Mixing & Mastering.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: When working on a song the first thing you must have is judgment. Understand what the client's search is and there are production and very artistic issues in the mix that define one but... Always with judgment because sometimes you don't have to add anything to a song that is wonderful just as it was written, produced and arranged. I just make each item stand out as it was originally weighed.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Open project, Listen, discover, edit, balance mix, mix and mastering
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My audio chain is hybrid. I like to have the recall and practicality of the digital ecosystem but the warmth and color of analog equipment. I record, mix and add on the API table. With Universal Audio converters I also process my masters in the same chain, coloring with Avalon or different eqs to add character.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: A broad question. My influences are permeated with each stage of my life. Started with Hip Hop. Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Jay Z as mainstream artists and later mutated to NuMetal, Korn, Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit, system of a down... From there to more classic rock Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Zeppelling, Black Sabbath. Then came Blues, EDM, Classic and I could go on all day.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: In the studio I usually work with Mastering requests but also a large part of the time is dedicated to "making records" that is; Production, Recording, Editing, Mixing & Mastering..
