I will always look to work with Jonny when I have a project. Always fantastic production and in my own experiences has taken my songs to the next level. He trusts in your creative vision while also contributing his own ideas and spins on things, ultimately resulting in the best sound you could hope for, even surprising results at times (in the best way!) highly recommend.

Interview with Jonny Edwards - Producer

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I helped Zak Gregory complete his 2nd Album. It was a 15 track album that we recorded in his living room over the space of a week. A lot went into the process as we turned a lot of songs from just acoustic demos to full blown rock songs. As well as this I mixed and mastered the album on top of working a full time job. We involved the likes of Ben steer on a lot of the project as well. I also played drums on the album. All in all a very fun and challenging project to work on.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently working on a small EP for a hard rock band who I recorded back in October. I am working on their project from recording all the way through mastering.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Ben Steer is a fantastic all rounder and a great addition to any song! He specialises in vocals, song writing and guitar! Zak Gregory is also a very good singer and songwriter with an amazingly unique voice and songwriting style.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I mainly work on digital systems as it is all I have access to at the moment. I think a lot of digital products are starting to get very good at analogue emulation! The ease and access of digital is very good so for that reason I say digital.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To convey the artists wants and needs for their song through a professional mix.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Working with a range of talented people and different music from all different backgrounds!

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Most clients I am with have only ever asked questions about the recording process when we have been doing that together. It usually consists of mic placement questions which I will then proceed to show them what I’m doing and what effect that has. Other questions usually consist of mix related ones such as; “how can we get this to sound more like this”. I will then again proceed to explain or show them.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I think a lot of people think some mix engineers take over the song and make it their own with their mixes sometimes. This is sometimes the case but I think that’s why it’s important to understand what the artist wants. There is nothing wrong with an engineer adding his own stamp to it but it still needs to be what the artist wants for the song.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What style is the music? What they want from the mix? (Clarity, vibe, power etc.) Ideal turn around time? Is it a multitrack recording?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be precise and clear in what you want for your song. Know what you want the finish product to sound like. At the end of the day you may be hiring someone to mix your song but it also is your product! Feel free to take on their advice but if it’s not to your liking, stick with your gut.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Well of course you need a DAW! so a powerful macbook would do! A midi keyboard with drum bads for sure. A good all round mic with XLR lead of course and an audio interface.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: It started when I was 16 and a music technology course was finally open to me at college. From there I started to find my own projects inbetween that and going to uni to study a degree in music technology. Once I graduated I got a job as an assistant audio engineer at a performance college. I gained a lot of all round audio experience there for the best part of 2 years. Upon leaving that role I have been working on projects over the last couple of years. Everything from Albums to singles and EPs.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I would say my style in drumming is very rock orientated but I love all genres and have been playing all genres for some time now so I can always adapt to the genre at hand. Mixing wise I would say I like to go for broad strokes straight from the get go and circle back around for fine tuning.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with the likes of John Mayer.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Try and picture what the track needs in terms of vibe and try to understand the artist vision for said vibe.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: The main genres I have worked on are: Rock Pop rock Hardcore Hard rock Country Singer songwriter Folk

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I have been Drumming for most of my clients projects and my own projects as I have over 15 years of playing and playing in a studio and live setting. Second to this would be my skills with in the box audio post production which I have been doing both in a professional position and freelance since 2019.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring my own experience and knowledge of genres over years and years being interested in music and exposing myself to different artists and genres. I provide energy to tracks that need them but can also add more vibe to softer songs that may require it.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I will speak with the client on the vibe they would like the song to invoke. I will then analyse the track thoroughly thinking about areas that need touching up, colouring, overall tone changes and arrangement. The major first step is picturing how the song will sound at the end. Once this has been decided I will pick which part of the track I want to start on first.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I currently have a small remote setup working on an Apple Mac Mini Studio M1 Max 32GB Ram. KRK Rokit monitors.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Production: Dan Lancaster Jason Perry Jacob Collier Musicians: Tom Misch Muse Biffy Clyro Greta Van Fleet John Mayer Marvin Gaye

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The current work that I have in my Portfolio consisted of recording clients projects and following the project through post production and mastering.
