Rock and Country Mixing

Beejay Morgan on SoundBetter

With over 30 years of musical experience on both sides of the glass, I've developed a keen ear for detail. I've played with and worked with all kinds of bands, from jazz to country to rock and metal. I just opened my own studio, so prices are low while I build my portfolio. Let's do this!

A varied history of musical endeavors allows me to pull influence from unexpected places. I grew up in Oklahoma, steeped in country music. I discovered grunge as a teenager, and moved through rock and metal from there. I love acoustic ballads and high-gain screamers. I have a special interest in modern Country music, with its high-gain guitars and pristine vocals.

Interview with Beejay Morgan

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Look for someone who is going to be kind, and is willing to work with you to get your best performance. Don't settle for the cheapest option. You won't be happy with the end product.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I started recording my friends' bands in my early 20s, and took a detour as a Software Engineer. A couple of years ago, I decided to dig into my passion and open up a full-fledged recording studio. So, here we are!

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: I'd actually really love to get John Cooper from Skillet in the studio. That would be a blast!

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Don't overthink things. Use your ears, not your eyes.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: I've spent a large part of my life working in pop/alt rock. I also have a passion for church music of all kinds!

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: My strongest skill is bringing out the musician's best performance, whether that's coaching them through a tough vocal session or backing them up with another guitar part. I love it all!

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: I've got a three room studio: A medium-sized live room, control room, and a dead vocal booth. As far as outboard gear goes, I've got a set of WA412 preamps, an 1176-style compressor, and Focusrite Clarett interfaces, pumping out through Focal Alpha 80 studio monitors. I work in Logic, and love UA plugins. Their Distressor plugin is :chefskiss:

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: I really love the small, independent studio scene right now. Guys like Andrew Masters, Colt Capperune, and Jeremy Mang are killing it.

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: I have a lot of clients come in with an idea for a song -- sometimes it's a riff, sometimes it's lyrics, and sometimes it's just a theme or a phrase. I love helping them build a song out of an idea.
