Interview with Juan de la Piedra

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Recently I was working on a song for Eurovision (the best known music TV contest in Europe), via Sony Music. Despite the time trial we had, I'm proud of the whole process we went through composing such a beautiful song. My role was as Composer, lyricist, Top Line, Main Producer and recording, mixing and mastering engineer.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Right now I'm producing a concept album that is quite interesting on an artistic level. It fuses styles between R&B, Alternative Hip Hop and Electronic while keeping the commercial structures of Pop. I'm working on the composition, production, recording, mixing and mastering.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: At the moment I don't know anyone closely.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both seem essential to me, it's like having to choose between your father and your mother. Both Analog and Digital keep brilliant tools.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: Quality, originality, good service, punctuality and proximity to the customer

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Enjoying the process and realizing how fast the time goes by, working on what I like the most.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Q: What genres do you master? A: Pop, Trap, Reggaeton, R&B, Alternative and classic Hip Hop, EDM, Alternative and fusion genres. Q: What are your rates when working on large projects? A: They depend on the type and amount of work. I usually give a small discount when I have several orders for the same client. Q: Can I send you some references about my idea? A: No problem! But they are not always necessary, the fact of not having them can lead to different paths...

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: I wish I knew, I often analyze myself.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: - What is your deadline? - What do you want to transmit with this idea? - Do you have any reference in mind? - What images represent this song for you? - Could you send me your tracks in an orderly and well named way? - Are you satisfied with the work done?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Trust my experience, I am a skilled and hard-working person.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Piano, MacBook Pro, Audio-Technica MX50, USB-C Mic. and a Solar Energy system.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started producing on my own at the age of 13, until I decided to study a degree in Contemporary Music Composition. This brought me a brutal amount and variety of knowledge in the music field. I have been professionally producing and learning non-stop for 11 years (because you never stop learning). I currently work producing, composing, mixing and mastering music for artists, labels, commercials and TV.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Eclectic, bold, fresh, raw and varied like the colors of fireworks.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Rick Rubin. Because of the way he thinks, sees and listens to music.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Perfection is not always necessary, try to look for different ways of working and experimenting that will give you differentiated results.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop, Trap, Reggaeton, R&B, Alternative and classic Hip Hop, EDM, Alternative and fusion genres.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is producing, mixing, mastering and composing Top Lines.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Mainly I bring the ability to translate the idea that my client has and express it in the best possible way. I consider my experience producing and composing songs to be extremely important when it comes to bringing any nuance to the song.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: It depends on the type of work my client asks me to do. In a musical production context of a song, I usually work from the beginning of the idea composing the song from the chords, lyrics and melodies, finishing with meticulous details in the production process and making final arrangements. In the case of mixing and mastering assignments, the process is simpler, clients send me their stems correctly named and ordered, they have three revisions (although I am usually flexible). Depending on the amount of work required, it usually takes between 1 and 5 days for productions. About the mixes, you will have them between 1 to 3 days and the mastering in 1 day maximum. This all depends on the quantity, density and type of work required!

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I usually work in two different studios, I have my own professional home studio (essential!) and another one in the center of Madrid with a professional set up to the level of the industry. Equipped with Focal SM9, Auralex, UAD Apollo 8, Tascam Analog Mixer, Neuman U87 Ai, 2 Neumann TLM 49, Neumann KM 184, Audio-Technica AT-4047, lots of AKG Mics, lots of Shure mics, lots of old vintage mics, Vocal Booth, Acoustic Piano, Drums, Guitars, Electric Bass, Yamaha CS-50, Omnichord and many more toys!

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Throughout my career I have been inspired by many artists and producers, both old and new school, summarizing the most relevant ones would be: Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Rick Rubin, Pharrel Williams, Dr. Dre, Mike Dean, Skrillex, Timbaland, Noah "40" Shebib, Kanye West, Travis Scott & James Blake.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I usually work producing songs and also music for commercials and TV. I usually compose from scratch or from an idea of my clients and I participate in the whole process of creating the song. I work as a sound engineer mixing and mastering music of many varieties, my real strong point is the vocal and instrumental mixing of Pop, Trap, Reggaeton, R&B, Alternative and classic Hip Hop, EDM, Alternative and fusion genres.
