Alex is the most fun-to-work with person we have ever collaborated. He has an all-round view on many music genres, he will listen to you carefully and he will pay all his attention to your music needs and inner thoughts. He is really concerned with his approach on your project, he is very detailed and he will give you his opinion during the whole process to provide you the best outcome. On top of all that, his suggestions are on point and we highly recommend him to take care of your music production and fulfill it to the best possible result.

Interview with Voodoo Project Studio

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: Nikos Pavlou is a friend of mine and great mixing engineer! If you're looking for a studio and live engineer based in the UK, Nikos is your guy!

  3. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  4. A: I bring a fresh and modern perspective to every production I work on, of course respecting the client's vision, but suggesting new elements to elevate the aesthetics and the end result.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: There are things analog does better than digital and the other way around. That's the reason I work on a hybrid setup to have the best of both worlds.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: The creativity and the birth of a new song is what I love in producing.

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: I advise them to search for an engineer/producer that is familiar with their genre or even find a few of them and choose the one that they can communicate easier and better. The final result is hugely based on communication among everybody involved.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I am the engineer behind Voodoo Project Studio. I was fascinated by music since being very young and began playing the piano at the age of 5, and later on, played the guitar in various local bands. Following my short musician career, I developed a passion for music production and began recording local bands. I then moved from Thessaloniki to Athens, to study sound engineering and to get to know Athens’ music scene. My work with numerous artists and bands, both live and in the studio, has exposed me to a range of different genres, making me a very versatile audio professional.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: I would love to work with MARO. Her vibe and atmosphere in her music excites me and her songwriting is just perfect in its simplicity.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: To musicians: Get as well prepared as you can, before you enter the recording studio. To producers: Get the best performances from the musicians, don't hesitate to push them to perform better or play a part again and again, just do it in a meaningful way and don't waste their time.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: I usually work on rock and other heavy genres. However, I have also extensively worked with singers/songwriters on indie/folk productions.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: When I receive the multitracks, I make a basic volume and panning balance and listen to the tracks to see if they need any editing/quantisation etc. This way I can see what the tracks need before the mixing process starts. After the editing, I listen to the references of my client, take notes and start mixing. If it's a production gig, I also listen to the references and lay down some basic tracks and experiment with different soundscapes and fx.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I work in a hybrid setup, using both analog and digital tools. I use a toft atb16 console as a summing device and for the fantastic eq and also use analog compressors such as the Tegeler Vari Tube and the Elysia Xpressor (even during the tracking process) and saturators such as the Warm Audio 2MPX. However, plugins like FabFilter Pro Q3 or Soothe2 cannot be recreated with analog gear and that's the beauty of hybrid!

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Jay Maas, Jordan Valeriote, Zakk Cervini, Nolly Getgood, Andrew Wade, George Lever and Greg Wells are some of my audio professionals that have inspired me through the years.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: I mostly do recording and mixing for my clients, but production/instrumentation is also a very often situation I get myself into.
