Interview with Antoine Zayoun
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My first solo album. I put all of me in it, from production to performance to mixing and mastering and it turned out something so sonically pleasing and has made an impact on many people's lives.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: My second solo album
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog sound with digital precision.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'll never give them something they're not completely satisfied with
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The fact that I get to do what I love for a living. There's really no dull moment.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: "We'll fix it in the mix". If you have a bad production no amount of mixing can fix that. Get it right from the beginning.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Do you have a reference mix and how faithful to the reference mix would you like your mix to be?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Trust your mixing engineer, sometimes what you want for the song is not the best for it.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Well to make music all I need is my MacBook Pro, M-Audio MIDI keyboard, Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP audio interface, AKG 414 Xlii mic and PMC speakers, so that's 5 pieces of gear right there.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Since university I started making music for my friends' audiovisual projects. Shortly after that I opened my own studio in music production and mixing and have been doing that for the past 12 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Heavy, hard hitting and melodically progressive
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Scott Stapp. I've learned to sing by singing along to Creed and Scott has had a huge influence on my style. To work with him someday, maybe producing or mixing a song for him would be a dream come true.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always start from an arrangement track. Once the skeleton of the song is made it's easy to start putting all the pieces into place.

Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Anything that is required, whether it's arrangement, tracking, mixing or mastering
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: On the music production aspect of things I usually take the client's idea in any shape or form it is and start building the arrangement upon it with the tracking until it's done On the mixing aspect, I either receive the multi-track in person or online and work on getting a rough mix within the first few hours. After the first revision from the client I work on getting to a final mix. If there is any further changes required I fix them and send the final mix to the client within a day or two.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a hybrid setup but I'm finding myself mixing more and more completely in the box
