Interview with Matthew Fletcher

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I co-wrote and recorded the Guitar and Bass to the song 'sincerely, me' by Emmy. It feels like a huge milestone for me as I'm incredibly proud of my songwriting contribution to that track, and feel it's the best track which I've helped to write, record and release so far!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently, I'm in my final year and semester of University.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Currently I use digital equipment due to what is available to me at the moment. I don't have any personal preference for either though and totally believe that both are important to achieve different types of results with recording.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: To deliver high quality and musical guitar parts to your track.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Being able to work in an industry I feel truly passionate about is a blessing. I get an incredibly strong satisfaction out of helping to realise the vision of clients, my bands or my own solo music.

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: I'd highly recommend looking for a specialist in whatever genre your track is over somebody who appears to be a jack of all trades. Musicians who have a niche which they are strong at tend to be far more practiced in their particular area of expertise, and because of this, can deliver better results to you!

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I've been a Guitarist for fourteen years now, and have almost finished a university course in music.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Technical, precise and musical.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: John Petrucci - He's my all time favourite Guitarist; I'd absolutely love to meet him one day!

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Dipping the EQ in distorted Guitar tones from between 250hz and 500hz by 1-2db always helps me to tighten Guitar tones and helps the Bass to sit better in the mix, I think.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Rock and Metal music! These are absolutely my favourite genres to listen to and play!

  23. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  24. A: I bring technical ability, creative writing/interpretation to different parts which I need to record.

  25. Q: What's your typical work process?

  26. A: First, I will listen to a track three times over, and make notes on everything that I hear - the structure, arrangement, melodies and harmonies, any ideas I have for parts, etc. Next, I'll learn the song to the best of my ability, and either try to write creative, but musical parts to the track or interpret it to the best of my ability. Finally, I record the track and send it to whoever needs it.

  27. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  28. A: My setup is simple, yet effective! I currently run an IK Multimedia AXE I/O interface into Reaper, and record everything through high quality plugins.

  29. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  30. A: Currently, I get a lot of inspiration from my band Sertralinum. It's a brand new Progressive Metal band which formed a few months ago, and at the risk of sounding egotistical, I think we write some fantastic ideas together!
