Interview with Mussa Adetoye
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: What I bring to a song is authenticity and a genuine connection to the subject matter. I like to create vivid imagery with my lyrics, painting pictures that allow listeners to feel and visualize the story I'm telling. My goal is to highlight subject matters that often get overlooked in everyday society, whether it's addressing personal struggles, social issues, or deeper emotional experiences. I strive to create music that resonates on a real, human level—something listeners can relate to and reflect on long after the song ends.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process begins with really sitting with the instrumental. I take the time to connect with the beat and think about the concept, the emotion, and the energy I want to convey. I like to fully immerse myself in the vibe of the track so that I can create a cohesive and authentic narrative. I prefer to have the song written in its entirety before I record. This helps me stay focused on the flow, structure, and overall vision. Once I’m satisfied with the lyrics and the direction of the song, I lay down the main vocals in one session to capture the full energy and essence of the track. Afterward, if I’m satisfied with the take, I’ll come back later for mixing and mastering to refine the sound and make sure everything is polished. I believe in letting the song breathe before making final tweaks, as it helps me stay true to the original feeling I wanted to express.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I draw inspiration from a wide variety of artists and music production professionals, each of whom has influenced my approach to music in different ways. Artists like Kendrick Lamar, Lupe Fiasco, and André 3000 inspire me with their storytelling abilities and complex lyricism. Their ability to weave deep, meaningful narratives into their music is something I strive to replicate in my own work. Pharrell's innovative production style has also had a major impact on me, as well as Michael Jackson’s unmatched artistry and ability to blend genres. Curren$y’s laid-back, smooth flow and Kid Cudi’s emotionally raw and introspective approach to music resonate deeply with me. I also find a lot of inspiration in more contemporary sounds like Afrobeat music, especially from artists like Burna Boy, whose fusion of traditional African rhythms with global genres has pushed me to explore new sonic landscapes.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: As a hip-hop artist, I offer a wide range of services to help bring any track to life. My versatility spans across multiple genres, including RnB, Alternative, and Pop, which allows me to adapt and collaborate effectively with various styles and sounds. The most common type of work I do includes writing verses, creating reference tracks, and crafting catchy choruses. I also offer creative idea guidance, helping shape the direction of a song, whether it's refining a concept, adjusting melodies, or enhancing the overall vibe. I'm always ready to collaborate with other artists, producers, and songwriters to ensure the final product aligns with the vision and resonates with the intended audience.
