Endorse Arnstein LillevikInterview with Arnstein Lillevik
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m especially proud of is a mini-festival I hosted and curated, where we performed a full set of mostly unreleased music. It was a big moment for me – not just as a producer and performer, but as someone trying to build a unique sound and community around the music I make. The response was incredible, with a lot of people asking about the tracks and when they would be released. It gave me real momentum and confidence in the direction I’m taking as an artist. My role included everything from producing the music, prepping the live set, and promoting the event, to performing and connecting with the audience on the night. It was a full-circle experience that reminded me why I do what I do.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment, I’m preparing to release a mini-EP with Rebelvision in the coming month. I’m also working on new tracks with artists like ELIA and Settow, which I’m really excited about. In parallel, I’m involved in mixing and production prep alongside Herman Hassel, collaborating on projects with some of Norway’s biggest artists. It’s a busy and inspiring time, and I’m always looking to take on new creative collaborations as well.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes – I highly recommend Vintage Division for mixing and mastering. Their work is consistently high-quality, punchy, and polished. If you're looking for a tight, professional sound, they’re a great team to work with.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I’ll probably make a few enemies with this one – but I’m definitely digital. I’ve always been a bit of a computer nerd and a former gamer, so I love working inside the box and getting creative with what happens on screen. That’s where I feel most free and efficient. That said, I’ve recently started to appreciate the depth and character of analog gear, and I’m exploring how to integrate that into my digital workflow. I actually based my entire bachelor’s thesis on this intersection – how digital and analog can work together to enhance modern music production. To me, it’s not about choosing one over the other – it’s about using whatever tools help tell the story best.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is to treat every project like it’s my own. I’m committed to delivering high-quality, emotionally resonant music that meets your vision – and often goes beyond it. I’ll always be communicative, reliable, and open, making sure you feel confident and heard throughout the entire process. Whether you’re starting from a rough idea or a finished demo, I’ll help you bring it to life with care, creativity, and professional polish.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most about my job is the opportunity to be creative every single day, and that no two projects are ever the same. Every artist brings a unique perspective, and I genuinely enjoy the collaborative process – bouncing ideas back and forth, and building something meaningful together. I also love how much I learn from my clients. They often come up with ideas or directions I wouldn’t have thought of myself, and those moments push me to grow and evolve. Some of those unexpected contributions even become techniques or sounds I carry into future projects.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: One of the most common questions I get is: "Can you help me finish this idea I’ve started?" My answer: Absolutely. Whether it’s a rough voice memo, a beat idea, or a half-finished demo, I love jumping in and helping artists bring their vision across the finish line – with a clean, powerful and release-ready result. Another common one is: "Can you make it sound like [artist or song]?" Definitely. I’m great at analyzing reference tracks and translating the vibe, energy, and sonic characteristics into something new that still feels personal and unique to the artist. I also often hear: "Is mixing and mastering included?" Yes – when I produce a track, mixing and mastering are always included, so you get a full-package delivery ready for release.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconceptions is that music production is just about “pressing buttons” or making a beat quickly. In reality, producing a great track involves a deep understanding of sound, emotion, arrangement, and detail. It’s not just about making something sound good – it’s about making it feel right. Another common one is thinking that the creative process is always instant. Sometimes the magic happens fast, but often it takes time, patience, and revisions to truly bring an idea to life in a way that resonates with both the artist and the listener.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually start by asking a few key questions to understand the artist’s vision and needs: Do you have a demo or rough idea I can hear? What vibe or emotion are you going for with this track? Are there any artists or songs you'd like this to be inspired by? What will you be using the final track for? (Streaming, live shows, sync, etc.) Do you have any specific deadlines or release plans? These questions help me tailor the production and make sure we're on the same page from the start. Every artist is different, so I like to adapt my approach to fit their style and goals.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My best advice is: Be as clear as possible about your vision – but don’t be afraid to leave room for creative input. The more I understand what you're aiming for – in terms of vibe, references, energy, and emotional feel – the better I can bring that vision to life. Also, don’t stress about having everything perfectly figured out. Part of my job is to help shape the sound with you. Whether you’re starting with a voice memo or a fully written song, I’ll meet you where you are and help guide it to a professional, release-ready result. Good communication is key – so don’t hesitate to share your thoughts, ask questions, or give feedback throughout the process
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Assuming I’ve got power and maybe a coconut or two for inspiration, I’d take these five essentials: Laptop – My creative brain. Can’t do much without it. MIDI keyboard – For sketching out ideas and melodies quickly. Monitors – Gotta hear the groove right. Audio interface – Clean sound in and out, always. Microphone – Probably my Shure SM7B, versatile and reliable for vocals, instruments, or even capturing island ambience if it comes to that. With that setup, I could easily get into a good creative flow – even if the only collabs are with seagulls.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I grew up in a musical family, so music has always been a natural part of my life. I started producing seriously in 2020 during the first lockdown – and from that point on, I’ve been creating music every single day. Since then, I’ve earned a bachelor’s degree in Sound Engineering and Music Production, and have had the opportunity to collaborate with a wide range of artists. I currently work closely with Herman Hassel, one of Norway’s leading mixing engineers, while continuing to build my portfolio with talented artists like ELIA, Settow, WTCHOUT, and others. Every project is a chance to grow, explore, and push my sound further.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style blends melancholic melodies with driving, rhythmic grooves – creating music that makes you want to move, but also feel. I’m drawn to warm textures, hypnotic drums, and emotionally charged atmospheres, often working within genres like Afro House, Melodic House, EDM-pop, and R&B. I aim to strike a balance between dancefloor energy and emotional depth, always bringing a unique character to each production.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with KAYTRANADA, especially on a more house-oriented project. His rhythmic sensibility, unique swing, and soulful sound design are incredibly inspiring – and I think combining that with my own melodic and percussive approach could result in something fresh, genre-blending, and truly innovative. It’s a collaboration I feel could push boundaries and create something new.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t get too caught up in other people’s “do’s and don’ts.” If it sounds cool to you, it is cool – regardless of how you got there. Trusting your ears and your instincts is how you develop your own sound and stand out from the crowd. Some of the best ideas come from breaking the so-called rules.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mostly work on EDM productions, with a strong focus on Afro House, Melodic House, and Tech House. I enjoy crafting rhythm-driven, danceable tracks with character and depth – whether it's club-focused or more atmospheric. In addition to EDM, I’ve also worked extensively with hip-hop and R&B artists, producing everything from smooth, soulful beats to modern, hard-hitting instrumentals. I’m always open to genre-crossing ideas and love bringing different influences together in my work.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is the ability to truly understand the artist’s vision, and then take it one step further by adding my own creative perspective. I always listen closely to what the client wants – but I'm also not afraid to suggest ideas or make creative choices that elevate the track beyond expectations. It’s that balance between collaboration and intuition that helps me bring out the best in every project.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring a melancholic yet driving energy to a song – something that makes you want to move, but also feel. My productions often blend rhythm and groove with emotional depth, creating a sound that’s both atmospheric and impactful. Whether it's through warm synths, textured drums, or subtle harmonic layers, I aim to give each track a sense of soul and momentum that connects with the listener on multiple levels.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process depends on the project, but most often it begins with a demo, vocal idea, or creative concept from the client. From there, I usually receive a reference track or artist they’d like to be in the same ballpark as – this helps me understand the vibe and direction. I typically start the production by laying down drums first, making sure they feel punchy, groovy, and danceable right from the beginning. Once the rhythm foundation is set, I build around it with bass, synths, FX and other key elements. Every project is different, but over the years I’ve developed a reliable workflow that keeps things creative while still being structured and efficient.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is clean and efficient, built to handle both creative production and technical mixing. I work primarily on a custom-built PC, with a laptop setup for producing on the go. My main monitoring setup includes Yamaha HS7s, a UAD Apollo Twin interface, and a Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro headset for detailed listening. For recording vocals and instruments, I use the Shure SM7B, a versatile and reliable mic for a wide range of sources. In addition to my home setup, I have access to a professional mixing and recording studio equipped with Pro Tools, high-end outboard gear like Elysia, Tube-Tech, and more – as well as a broad selection of microphones, including industry standards like the Neumann U87, Royer ribbon mics, and many others. This gives me full flexibility for capturing and finishing tracks at a professional level.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired by a wide range of producers and artists, but some key influences include Keinemusik, Chris Lake, and KAYTRANADA. I really admire how they each bring something unique to the table – from groove-driven, organic house to punchy club-ready productions and soulful, genre-blending beats. That said, I'm constantly working to develop my own sound – a personal blend of everything I've grown up listening to and fallen in love with over the years. I believe that’s what makes each production I do stand out in its own way.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common type of work I do for clients is music production – often from the ground up. I specialize in Afro House, EDM, Hip-Hop, and R&B, and frequently work with artists who have a vocal idea, a demo, or just a creative vision they want to bring to life. In addition to producing the track, I always handle the mixing and mastering to ensure a polished, release-ready sound.
