Interview with Pro Audio Engineer | Pop, EDM
- Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
- A: I'm very happy with my "Beef, It's What's For Dinner" commercials that have aired on TV, Internet and Radio.
- Q: What are you working on at the moment?
- A: Expanding a network of consistent clientele!
- Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
- A: My friend Craig Brock recommended I try this platform - I've worked with him professionally a couple of times and he is extremely kind and knowledgeable on the craft.
- Q: Analog or digital and why?
- A: Ideally both. Realistically digital because anyone who says analogue I've found is just way more wealthy than the average person. You can find a digital clone of your favorite analogue toy and it will cost a fraction of the actual product and sound indistinguishable from the "real thing".
- Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
- A: I deliver high quality work in a very fast turnaround.
- Q: What do you like most about your job?
- A: The greatest audio engineer is the one whose touch is imperceptible.
- Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
- A: How long have I known I wanted to do this for a living? The answer is - I've always known.
- Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
- A: That people shouldn't have to pay for it because it "Looks so easy".
- Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
- A: What are some artists you admire? Who do you take inspiration from?
- Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
- A: Clear vision, concise instructions.
- Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
- A: laptop, headphones, mic, XLR, and a mouse!
- Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
- A: I was in the Air Force for six years, all the while working on the Air Force News Network. When my enlistment ended in 2020, I began my journey into professional voice over work and freelance audio engineering.
- Q: How would you describe your style?
- A: a modern take on Daft Punk
- Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
- A: NEIL FRANCES is a DJ and audio-engineering duo that attempts to bring back the sound of disco with more contemporary grooves.
- Q: Can you share one music production tip?
- A: I personally try to look at a track not as a series of instruments, but a section of frequencies that exists in their own space. Our job as audio engineers is to separate these frequencies into their most desirable shape to then fit them back into a larger whole.
- Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
- A: Pop, Nu Disco, and EDM.
- Q: What's your strongest skill?
- A: Extremely clean and balanced mixing.
- Q: What do you bring to a song?
- A: I have over a decade of professional audio engineering expertise. Whether it's writing lyrics, mixing an existing track, or polishing a mix, I have the experience to get your musical project across the finish line.
- Q: What's your typical work process?
- A: I pride myself on offering extremely fast turnaround. I like to take a quick yet methodical approach to all audio engineering tasks beginning with essential composition and ending with mastering.
- Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
- A: I have a home PC with two 1080TI graphics cards along with a 64-gig RAM drive(extremely low latency). For the studio portion, I have two 6-inch JBL monitors, an SSL 2+ audio interface, and a RODE NT1 microphone.
- Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
- A: Rick Rubin and Shawn Everett for their exact, minimalistic approach to audio engineering
- Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
- A: Mixing and mastering are my specialties, with an emphasis on vocal EQ-ing
