Interview with Paulo Noriega

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of is my very first gig, where I had the opportunity to mix and master a single for my mother, who is a singer. This project was special because it gave me my first real experience working on a professional track and allowed me to apply my skills in a meaningful way. It was rewarding to contribute to her music and see how my work helped bring her vision to life, which gave me the confidence to pursue this career further.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment, I’m working on mixing recordings from live sessions, which is a great way to capture the raw energy and authenticity of performances while ensuring the sound is polished and balanced. Alongside that, I continue mixing and mastering studio tracks across different genres. This variety keeps my workflow dynamic and sharp.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Yes, I’m familiar with Simonmix on SoundBetter and would definitely recommend him to my clients. He has a strong reputation for delivering high-quality mixes with great attention to detail and a clear understanding of artists’ visions. Collaborating with professionals like him helps ensure that clients receive the best possible results.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I believe both analog and digital have their unique strengths, and the best results often come from combining them. Analog gear adds warmth, character, and a certain musicality that’s hard to replicate digitally. On the other hand, digital tools offer incredible precision, flexibility, and convenience. I like to use a hybrid approach—leveraging the best of both worlds to create mixes that are both technically polished and emotionally rich.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to my clients is to deliver exceptional sound quality with meticulous attention to detail, always prioritizing their artistic vision. I commit to clear communication, timely delivery, and a collaborative approach, ensuring every project I work on exceeds expectations and truly resonates with its audience.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I like most about my job is the ability to bring music to life—to take raw recordings and transform them into something powerful and emotionally engaging. I love being part of the creative process, helping artists realize their vision while applying both technical skill and artistic intuition. Every project is a new challenge and opportunity to connect with music on a deeper level, which keeps my work exciting and fulfilling.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How involved will I be during the process? As much as you want! I encourage client feedback at every stage to ensure the final product matches your vision perfectly. How long will the mixing and mastering process take? It usually depends on the project’s complexity, but I aim to deliver a high-quality mix within 3 to 5 business days. For mastering, I typically turn around within 1 to 2 days. I always keep clear communication so you know the timeline and can plan your release accordingly.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that mixing and mastering is just about making the music louder or adding effects. In reality, it’s a deeply creative and technical process that involves shaping the emotional impact of a song, balancing every element so the music connects with listeners, and ensuring it translates well across all playback systems. It’s about enhancing the artist’s vision, not just polishing the sound.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: When I connect with prospective clients, I usually ask: What’s the overall vision or feeling you want this project to convey? Are there any reference tracks or artists whose sound you’d like to emulate? What stage is the project currently at (pre-production, recording, rough mix, etc.)? Do you have any specific technical preferences or requirements for the mix/master? What’s your timeline and budget for this project? How involved do you want to be during the mixing and mastering process? Are there any problem areas or challenges in the recordings I should be aware of? What platforms will the final mix be released on (streaming, vinyl, radio, etc.)? Do you prefer a specific style or approach to the mix, like more warmth, clarity, or punch? These questions help me tailor my work to fit the client’s vision and deliver the best possible result.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: My advice for a customer looking to hire a music producer or mixing/mastering engineer is to prioritize clear communication and shared vision from the start. Make sure you find someone who listens closely to your goals and understands the emotional core of your music. Also, look for an engineer with strong technical skills who can adapt their style to fit your unique sound—because the best results come from a true collaboration where both artist and producer work toward the same creative outcome.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: If I were on a desert island and could take just five pieces of gear, I’d choose: Universal Audio Apollo Twin interface — for its high-quality conversion and onboard processing. Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro headphones — for precise, critical listening anywhere. Laptop with Pro Tools and Ableton Live installed — to have a versatile DAW setup for production and mixing. ADAM Audio monitors — to ensure accurate reference monitoring. A portable MIDI controller — to help with composition and quick input on the go.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve been working as a music producer and mixing/mastering engineer for over three years. I started by honing my skills independently, learning both the creative and technical sides of music production. Over time, I gained experience working with various artists and projects, which helped me develop a keen ear for detail and a strong workflow. Recently, I took the step to open my own studio, where I focus fully on delivering high-quality mixes and masters tailored to each client’s vision.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is a blend of precision and emotion, where technical detail meets musicality. I focus on creating mixes that are clean, dynamic, and immersive, emphasizing clarity without sacrificing warmth or feeling. I like to balance modern production techniques with a soulful touch, making sure every track connects deeply with listeners while sounding polished and professional.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Deftones because their music blends intense emotion with rich, textured soundscapes that push the boundaries of alternative rock and metal. Their innovative approach to atmosphere and dynamics inspires me, and collaborating with them would be an incredible opportunity to contribute to music that’s both powerful and deeply expressive.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Trust your ears, but also take breaks often. Fresh ears are key to making good mixing decisions, so step away from your project regularly to avoid ear fatigue. When you come back, you’ll hear details and balance much more clearly, which helps you make better, more objective choices.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on genres that blend electronic and organic elements, such as liquid drum and bass, trap, soul, jazz, and R&B. I enjoy projects that allow me to combine smooth harmonic textures with dynamic electronic production, creating a rich and immersive sound that connects emotionally with listeners.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is critical listening—the ability to hear subtle details and nuances that others might miss. This allows me to make precise adjustments in mixing and mastering that truly elevate a track, ensuring clarity, balance, and emotional impact in every element of the music.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: What I bring to a song is a balance between technical precision and emotional depth. I make sure every detail—from the low-end foundation to the subtle ambience—supports the mood and message of the track. My goal is always to enhance the artist’s vision, helping their sound feel cohesive, impactful, and sonically unforgettable.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My work process always starts with listening and understanding the artist’s vision—I believe that emotional intent should guide every technical decision. From there, I organize the session, clean up the audio, and prepare tracks for mixing and mastering. I focus on balancing clarity, depth, and energy, carefully shaping each element with EQ, compression, and effects to serve the song. Throughout the process, I reference across multiple systems and stay in close communication with the client for feedback and revisions. My goal is always to deliver a final product that not only sounds professional but connects emotionally and translates universally.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio is a hybrid setup designed for high-precision mixing and mastering, located in a fully dedicated, acoustically treated space. I use ADAM Audio monitors paired with a subwoofer, which give me a clear and accurate representation across the frequency spectrum. For detailed referencing, I rely on my Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro headphones. I work primarily in Pro Tools and Ableton Live, supported by a range of industry-standard plugins from FabFilter, iZotope, Waves, Soundtoys, and UAD. My interface is a Universal Audio Apollo Twin, ensuring low-latency performance and pristine audio quality. The setup is built for accuracy, depth, and creative flow—so every mix translates beautifully on any system.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: ’m inspired by producers and engineers like Rick Rubin for his minimalist, emotion-driven approach, and Finneas for how he blends modern production with raw intimacy. I also admire Manny Marroquin and Serban Ghenea for their impeccable mixing work—every detail feels intentional and immersive. These professionals remind me that great production isn’t just about technical perfection, but about enhancing the emotional core of a song.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common type of work I do for my clients is mixing and mastering. I take raw multitracks and shape them into polished, balanced, and professional-sounding songs that are ready for release. My focus is on achieving clarity, depth, and emotional impact, ensuring that each element of the track shines while the overall mix translates well across all listening environments.
