Interview with Soco Gaston
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: For my final show before I graduated from music college, I had to not only look for musicians, coordinate rehearsals, and make sure everything went well, I also had to make full band arrangements to 6 different songs, with 3 of them being original compositions. I also played keyboard, synth, piano and singing. It was a complete success and an amazing experience to have all that responsability on my shoulders and watch it work that well
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At least three musical projects during my weeks, piano teaching, and online recording for clients.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: The digital gear allows everyone to access an enormous range of resources, and its great. I personally always loved the analog way of things, to move faders, to press bottons, to listen carefully when you change stuff because you depend on you perseption and not on numbers on the screen.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Until you don't get the results you are happy with, I'll keep working
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Music is my passion, everything that has music in it, I love.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How much time will it take and how much will it cost for me to work on the project. My answer is always different as I personalize each and every project to the needs of the client and my availability.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: As my primary thing is to be a keyboard player, sometimes people don't know that I can also play other instruments as guitar, bass, ukulele, percussion. I can also read and write sheet music, make rough mixes, arrangements, musical productions.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you need me to record? Do you have any sounds on your mind? Do you have the sheet music/chords or do you need me to learn it by ear? Any special detail you want me to focus on?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Pick whoever you think will give you the results you want, and I hope that person is me!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: I would take both my keyboards, a drum machine, a guitar, and some good music with good headphones to listen.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been playing piano since I was 7 years old, and grew listening great music (and playing it alone and with different bands). I studied in multiple music schools, and have been playing live and recording since I was a teenager. I offer my sessionist services since 2021, both in person and through the internet.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I play with passion, always.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would probably have a great time working with Bruno Mars, I think his songs have a very creative way of functioning, with lots of cool sounds, lots of beatiful melodies and ballads, I think I would learn a lot playing his songs.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always have a clear vision of what you want in your song, and what the song needs. When you have those things clear, everything you add must be exactly what you had in your mind, don't give up trying to achieve that.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work with rock and pop music, but I also worked with commercial type music, jazz, blues, funk, classical. I feel comfortable working with most of the styles.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is to fit to what the song is asking for, weather on how to play it, when to play it, or what sounds to use.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring the perfect mix between good quality playing and sound choice, and the parts that the song needs me to play, no more, no less. My goal is to always serve the song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Usually I try to get the most information possible from the client to fully understand his/her goal. After that, I start playing and thinking ideas so I can send a demo and get approval or some comments for me to fix. When I finish the first version I send it to the client and if they like it, I make the delivery, if not I keep working until they do!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work with a Yamaha CK88, a Korg KingKorg. I record with my Audient id14 MKII getting high quality recordings. I also have two electric guitars, one acoustic and one classical, an ukulele and an electric bass. If needed, I have the ability to use multiple instruments for the project. I can work in Ableton Live Suite, Pro Tools, Finale, Sibelius.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The Beatles, John Williams, Queen, Charly García, Bill Evans, George Martin
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
