Interview with Brenner Machado
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I'm working and I will continue to work with my wife in a duo as producer and pianist.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on recordings, backing tracks, and playing live with a gospel band.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I would recommend Ezequiel Rivas if you want a killer bass, I played with him a lot and he's truly amazing and has a beautiful gear. Also, I would recommend Jazzy D, whom I met through SoundBetter, it does great productions and he's a top guy.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I'm a digital guy. I love the portability and the sound now it's amazing.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I will try my best every time and that the job won't end until they are happy with the result.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: To do new things and, thanks to SoundBetter, to be able to do it anywhere in the world.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: If I can deliver the midi also, and my answer is: "Yeah, no problem".
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That sample-based instruments are inferior to the real ones.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask them if they have any reference music I can listen to, if they can deliver a multitrack, if they know the BPM of the song and some other technical stuff.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I always try to play what the customer needs/wants or I won't be happy.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A supercomputer with every plugin/library that exists, a good controller, a Hammond, a soundcard and really nice and comfy headphones (cause the birds and sea would upset my hearing if I choose monitors :p)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been playing keyboard for over 10 years now. My musical journey started in church, where I developed a strong foundation in gospel and worship music. I later studied Music Production and worked with several ministries, artists, and independent projects, both live and in the studio.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I don't really know how to describe it. It would be a mix of all the styles I learned over the years.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Stevie Wonder, cause he's the God of music to me.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always listen to the other musicians and play with them.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I love all kinds of music, so I want to get involved in recording all genres, always accepting my limitations and staying true to the customers.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I would say creativity.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I try to deliver what the customer and the song need.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen to the song a couple of times and then I start to play over the song till I find something. Then I record and listen to it to see if I like it, and then I maybe record a second option to send to the customer so he can choose.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use Cubase 10.5 pro in a PC AMD Ryzen 9 3950x, 64Gb of RAM and 2,5Tb of SSD. I mostly use vst libraries (like Omnisphere 2.6, Falcon 2.1, Kontakt), but I have a Komplete audio 6 mili 2 to record audio from the following keys: Yamaha MODX6, Roland RD-150, MicroKorg XL, Korg Kross, Novation XStation.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Although I get inspired by a lot of musicians that play all kind of instruments the ones that always get me inspired are Shaun Martin and Cory Henry from Snarky Puppy, and Stevie Wonder.
